Storage buildings can be constructed with materials like wood, galvanized steel, vinyl, aluminum, fiber glass hard plastic and the like. Wood is the most commonly used material, though people are turning to vinyl for the sake of convenience these days. Storage Sheds – My Personal Insight

Posted by on Tuesday, March 16, 2010. Leave a Comment

I was looking at a Rubbermaid shed the other day and was struck by the care and quality that goes into sheds these days, even the cheap garden sheds many of us have in our backyards.

The old days when a wooden shed was about as good as it gets are long gone. Look around the gardens of your friends and neighbors. You will find metal sheds, plastic sheds and even vinyl sheds. Occasionally you’ll find a wooden one, but modern materials and manufacturing methods seem to have pushed the traditional lumber structures to one side.

This is not all a good thing, to my way of thinking.

What’s wrong with wood? It is long lasting. I remember the wooden storage sheds in our home and our neighbor’s when I was a boy. It lasted for several decades and ours would perhaps still be standing, only we sold the family home and it was carted off to a new lot with the shed and garage discarded and left behind.

Also, a wooden shed can be changed and adapted without any trouble. Need some more shelves? Just build them in! I did this in our garage recently, and was surprised at just how simple it was to take some old lumber and fashion it into a set of sturdy, useful shelves. Want a bench? Get out your tools and build one!

Try doing this in a metal shed. It’s possible, but you may need special, proprietary shelving or bench units from the shed manufacturer. Or in a plastic storage shed. That is just not possible.

In a wooden garden shed however, you just need some lumber, a saw and hammer.

A well maintained wooden shed will keep your garden area and backyard tidy and neat for many years.

How to Choose a Storage Shed For Your Garden and Garage

Posted by on Tuesday, March 16, 2010. Leave a Comment

There are many choices of storage sheds for gardens and garage in the market nowadays. Therefore, it is not easy to choose one that will best suit your needs. However, there are several criteria that you can consider when selecting one for your garden.

i) Materials used

Storage sheds can be made of plastic, steel or even wood. If you have large budget, you may want to consider purchasing one which is made of metal because the price tend to be higher. However, those are made from quality plastic are also becoming more and more popular because of its light weight and modern outlook.

ii) Size

It is also important to consider the size of the shed that you are going to purchase. Obviously, the larger the shed, the more things that you can store inside. But you have to ensure that you have sufficient space for the shed.

If you intend to store items such as lawn mover, gardening tools, unused items in your kitchen or even your kid’s bicycles, then you need to have a larger storage shed that is at least 6 or 7 feet height. There more famous shed include those manufactured by Vinyl and Rubbermaid.

iii) Durability

Another important factor to take into consideration is the durability of the storage shed. If you intend to place the shed in your garden and will be exposed to rain, then it is more advisable to choose one that is water proof.

We can draw a conclusion that storage shed plays an important role in our day to day storage needs. Therefore, it is vital to choose one that will meet our requirements

Plastic storage shed has been widely used because of its affordability and durability. However, it is noticed that small plastic boxes are also becoming more and more popular in recent years because it is versatile, light and durable.

Sheds Are Storage Lifesavers!

Posted by on Monday, March 15, 2010. Leave a Comment

Have you found that the older you get and the longer you stay in one place, the amount of ‘stuff’ you have accumulated is getting ridiculous?!

If you answered yes, you are not alone and you’ll be happy to know that there is a solution for your growing storage needs. Sheds are a very efficient way to keep your clutter organized and they come in a huge range of styles, sizes, colors and materials.

If you’re the do it yourself type but you’re not quite sure how to build a shed, there are plenty of kits available both online and down at your local home improvement or hardware store. These kits come with the materials you’ll need and instructions about the tools to use and how to proceed with the installation. Aside from the time spent, which isn’t a great deal relatively speaking, you can get yourself a nice cheap garden shed this way.

There are a number of different materials used to build sheds and each one has it’s pro’s and con’s. Wood is very stylish and sturdy and can be customised to suit your home, however a good deal of construction is required and the wood used must be ‘real’ like cedar or pine and not particle board that will rot away over time. It can be more expensive and the maintenance needs of wood, such as painting, need to be considered also.

Metal sheds are generally made with galvanized steel or aluminum sheets attached to a metal frame, and have been treated to resist rust and corrosion. This is a great quality to consider when resistance to fire or insect damage is important. A downside to be aware of though is that they can dent easily if the metal is thin and are susceptible to wind damage, so you need to make sure they are firmly secured to the ground, usually on a concrete foundation.

Plastic and vinyl sheds won’t warp and rot like wood, or dent and rust like metal ones are prone to do and they are rugged and maintenance free. Many come with lengthy warranties and they tend to be more reasonably priced. Rubbermaid has a huge variety of these types of sheds. However, they can also, like the metal sheds, be unsteady in the wind if not properly secured.

Because of the many choices available these days, sheds aren’t just made to sit in the garden to store yard equipment and garden accessories anymore. Smaller versions can be placed in the garage with shelves and hooks for household tools, toys and memorabilia. And at the other end of the scale, much larger ones can store bicycles, motorbikes and even boats.

Regardless of what you need to store, make sure the shed you choose suits your climate and the space where you intend to place it. It also needs to allow you easy access to the items you have stored. Allowing room for more ‘stuff’ to be added over time is probably a wise idea too.

Plastic Garden Storage – Which Shed is Right For You?

Posted by on Thursday, March 11, 2010. Leave a Comment

Garden sheds have been around for years. These days, however, savvy homeowners have more options than ever. This article will help you decide what you want in a shed. It will also introduce you to some of the most popular and innovative sheds on the market.

Garden Shed Pros and Cons

If your yard is looking cluttered, a garden shed may be just what the landscaper ordered. After all, sheds provide more storage than other kinds of plastic garden storage, such as deck boxes and storage seats. If you need enough room to store a riding mower, for instance, or a collection of power tools, and if your garage is already packed to the gills, a garden shed is pretty much your only option.

The drawbacks of sheds are the mirror image of their advantages. Because they are the largest type of outdoor storage, they can take up a lot of room in your yard. If you are considering the purchase of a shed because you want your yard to look neat and uncluttered, installing a huge shed may defeat your purpose.

A second drawback is that larger plastic garden storage products are proportionally more expensive.

However, these drawbacks mainly apply to larger sheds. If either space or money is limited, don’t despair. There are sheds out there that are compact enough for a small yard–and cheap enough for a small budget.

Exercise Your Storage Options

Outdoor sheds come in a variety of sizes and prices. Some are made out of plastic, others out of metal or wood. Finally, you can choose either a vertical or a horizontal orientation, depending on the space available and the dimensions of the things you will be storing.

Some of the major brands of sheds include Arrow, Flower House, Rubbermaid, and Suncast. Rubbermaid’s Horizontal Storage Shed is made of plastic and is available in two sizes, with an interior capacity of either 18 or 32 cubic feet. If you prefer a shed with a vertical orientation, consider Rubbermaid’s model 3749, which versions that hold either 17 or 52 cubic feet. Another option is Rubbermaid’s 3753 Split-Lid Storage Shed, with a capacity of 18 cubic feet. This shed features a hinged roof that is divided into two sections. The built-in prop bar allows you to easily raise one side or the other for easy access. The lid itself is flat, so it can be used as a storage surface when you don’t need access to the contents.

Suncast also sells horizontal and vertical storage sheds, as well as a Storage Building that is available in six sizes. This product resembles an oversized dollhouse, with imitation wood detailing on the doors. Some sizes even include a flower box.

Another interesting option is the Shed Kit from 2x4basics. Available in Peak Roof and Barn Roof variations, this kit includes all the brackets and assembly instructions you’ll need; all you have to provide is the lumber and the manpower. The instructions are simple, and only straight 90-degree cuts are required.

I hope this article has helped you to clarify your outdoor storage needs. No matter what shape your yard is in, there’s sure to be a plastic garden storage product that will help you organize it.

The Benefits of a Rubbermaid Vertical Storage Shed

Posted by on Thursday, March 4, 2010. Leave a Comment

If your home could do with a bit more storage space, one of the Rubbermaid vertical storage sheds could be the ideal solution. These containers are all designed to provide maximum storage height, perfect for awkward items that are too tall to fit in a normal cupboard or closet. This article covers several of the vertical sheds from Rubbermaid and explains the main benefits of each one.

In contrast to the other storage sheds from Rubbermaid, the vertical sheds are specially designed to take up as little floor space as possible. The best selling shed is almost certainly the 3749 model, which comes in at about 2 feet square. That might not sound like much space, but with it also being 6 feet tall, you can store a surprising amount in its 17 cubic feet. The 3749 vertical storage shed also happens to be the only shed in this range that has a double wall. It goes without saying that it is fully resistant to the usual bumps, dents, leaks and bad weather. This is a well made and flexible unit that even accommodates wooden shelves as an optional extra.

The next unit in the range is the Rubbermaid 3746 vertical storage shed. This is slightly wider than the 3749 and provides 52 cubic feet of storage. It measures 4 foot 8 wide by 2 foot 8 deep. It is also a bit on the taller side at 6 foot 5 inches. This is a great move up if you have outgrown the 3749 shed. It is just as sturdy as the other sheds from Rubbermaid, being made from the same high quality material so you won’t need to worry about ongoing maintenance.

The biggest vertical storage shed in the range is called the 3673 Double Deep Modular Vertical Shed. This is significantly larger than the others and may require a screwdriver when you put it together. Once you have it assembled, you will have over 160 cubic feet of storage at your disposal. It does take up a fairly large space, being 5 by 6 foot wide, and over 6 feet tall. You might choose this unit if you don’t have any outdoor shed or garage.

One very useful advantage the 3673 has is an access ramp which makes it much easier to store heavy wheeled items such lawn mowers and trolleys. It also comes with a heavy duty floor to match. If you do decide to purchase one of these Double Deep sheds, it’s important to set them on flat ground, preferably on a base made of wood or ideally concrete. That will avoid any problems with the shed bending or flexing which can often prevent the doors opening and closing properly.

No matter which one you choose, all of the Rubbermaid vertical storage sheds provide an easy and simple alternative to a bulky and expensive wooden or metal storage shed. The smaller models are ideal for tidying up a greenhouse, backyard or patio without taking up too much space. Designed for easy assembly and low maintenance, every one of these sheds will provide excellent value for money.

Storage Space Solution

Posted by on Thursday, January 21, 2010. Leave a Comment

You asked for it. Well here are more storage space solutions, hints, and tips. The trick is to make every inch count. Just because you house is small does not mean you have to put up with limited storage space. And they all can be done without knocking down walls or adding on expensive additions. We have done the homework, so now you need to do the work. But do not worry. These tips, hints, and solutions are quick and easy. So get started.

Outdoor Storage Space

If you have got big storage space needs for outdoor equipment, a storage shed is for you. A storage shed is a roomy structure with a wide access entry for big equipment like tractors and lawn mowers. They keep outside storage items dry from and free from forming mildew. Some are decorative and match the main property structure. Others are just plain ugly metal storage sheds that develop rust overtime. Storage sheds come in three choices, pre-made, assembly required, and build-it-yourself. They require regular maintenance like a house, so if you dislike painting and roofing, think about renting a self storage unit.

Kitchen Storage Space

Have you finally had it with that dark and dingy storage space under the kitchen sink? Well there are many types of under sink storage solutions to solve you storage needs. There are two types of roll out storage trays which roll on smooth-action ball bearing drawer guides. They will get everything out in the open and let you find exactly what you need at a glance.

Make every inch in your kitchen count. With upper-cabinet shelves you can solve many storage problems. If you have empty space above you kitchen cabinets, you can use it as storage space to display decoration that you keep in storage boxes. But the reason why you do not use that storage space probably is from the sunk-in surface. This area is a dust trap. So here is your storage solution. Build upper-cabinet shelves. Upper-cabinet shelves not only keep decoration from sinking out of view, they are easy to clean.

Closet Storage Space

Stop singing I do not have enough closet space blues and maximize you closet storage space with an organizational system. Is your closet too small and overstuffed? Do your cluttered shelves, sagging clothes rods, and jumbled shoes all cry for more storage space? Of course, the coolest storage solution would be to expand the existing closet, but that is usually impossible. Instead, you can organize you existing closet space to make every cubic inch count. It is surprisingly easy and economical to squeeze more storage out of limited space. Double you closet capacity with and efficient built-ins.

Garage Storage Space

The wall in your garage is way too valuable just to hang rakes, bikes, and garden hoses at random on nails, hooks, or shelves. To make every inch of that wall storage space work for you, design a wall storage system. Organize your garage with an easy-to-build storage system that will hold your clutter.

Self Storage Options in Alabama

Posted by on Tuesday, January 5, 2010. Leave a Comment

Self storage is a good option for you if any aspect of your life has seemed to overflow into your living space, and you just don’t know where to put it all. Self storage options in Alabama can be a good solution even for those who own homes with lots of storage space inside, and storage in outbuildings like sheds or garages. No matter how much space you have, it seems, it’s all too easy to find yourself trying to dig out from underneath a mountain of “stuff.”

Renters and those who lease might have an even harder time finding a place for everything, depending on how much space is available to them. Small apartments don’t leave much room for storage, and often even those buildings that do have a storage space for renters only has a small space available to be shared among all the tenants. Self storage is a way to get the things out of your way without giving them up, or worrying about too-small storage in your building or other people having access to the same area.

Self storage options in Alabama can help you get control of your “stuff,” get organized, and maybe even help you further by giving you some breathing room at your home or business, and figuring out what you can part with to make storing your stuff even easier.

You might want self storage for things like business paperwork archives, unused furniture that you want to keep or can’t decide what to do with, boxes of stuff you need to sort to figure out what you’ll do with each item you can use self storage for any of these items, and more. Many self storage options in Alabama can be used for a month or for years; that depends on your and your needs. And the size of your self storage space is individual, too.

Self storage options in Alabama let you rent storage space. But the difference between self storage and the traditional types of storage people used to have to use to store items away from their own property is that you control your storage. You’re responsible for bringing your own items to the storage facility, putting them in your personal storage area, and locking the storage behind you.

In fact, most self storage companies don’t even provide a lock for your unit. You purchase your own padlock. While this might seem like an added expenses or hassle, remember-if you provide your own lock, no one else has a key. It’s an added measure of security for you and your things.

Also, no one else gets in your things. You don’t have to go through anyone to retrieve items from storage or put items in. And you can go almost any time, as long as the facility itself is open. You may not be able to go at certain times because the entire property is gated, for instance. If you need to be able to access your things at hours when you think they might not be open, examine your self storage options in Alabama and find a company with more flexible hours.

Anytime they’re open, you can get into your storage unit at will. The company doesn’t need to know what you access, or whether you remove or add anything. It’s a very private way to store your things.

When you’re looking at your self storage options in Alabama, you’ll want to compare prices and hours, of course. But don’t forget to compare security. It might be worth a little longer drive to another town to store your important items in a self storage facility with better security than the cheaper, closer facility.

Even the best lock can be cut off, and that could happen even if the storage was in your own backyard. But if the self storage facility has good security, it’s probably not something you’ll ever need to worry about.

Go to several facilities and really investigate your storage options. Make sure they look secure, and ask about things like fire alarms and a smoking policy-smoking should be forbidden on the property to prevent everyone’s stored items from going up in smoke. Ask about general alarm systems and security. Look at some facilities at night to see if they’re lit well enough to discourage would-be thieves. Don’t settle for a questionable company. You probably have dozens of self storage options in Alabama, so make a careful choice to best protect your stored items.

Vehicle Storage

Posted by on Wednesday, December 30, 2009. Leave a Comment

No matter what type of vehicle you own, when you need storage for that vehicle, you need some choices when it comes to storing it. Whether it is a classic car or one you tinker with under the hood it deserves to be protected. Many living scenarios don’t afford a place to store your vehicle or have partial storage such as an overhead shelter that does not completely protect your vehicle from the elements. When this is the case, you need some options for where to store your vehicle either for an entire season, a few weeks or whatever length of time you determine.

Warehouses are also great places for vehicle storage of your classic car. Many warehouses provide a safe place that is climate-controlled, secured by keyed or gated access only and large enough to ensure that your classic car is not bumped, damaged or disturbed by other people who also have storage space there. Some warehouses even have special options they offer to people who are planning to store cars of all types for an entire season such as all winter or summer or even the whole year. These features include winterizing such as oil changes or periodic vehicle starts to keep engines from remaining idle too long.

Another way to keep your car safe with vehicle storage is to store it in an underground parking facility. Underground parking is an excellent place to store your car when you are not driving it and want it to be safe from the elements. One of the main advantages of underground storage is that your car is not on the street but safely parked in a designed space underground. Underground parking facilities are comparable in cost to enclosed parking structures but sometimes are not manned by 24-hour security. Underground security can also be a risk for flooding damage if applicable.

Storage sheds are another way to store your vehicle. Unlike your garage, a storage shed can be constructed exclusively for your vehicle or if you are renting storage shed space, your car may be the only car in the shed. The nice thing about storage sheds is they can be designated just for your car and not other items that might damage your classic car like paint, tools or other objects.

Keeping your car safe with vehicle storage is the best way to take care of your car when you do not have space in your garage and you need to protect your car from the elements such as rain and snow. Vehicle storage comes in a variety of options but one of the most popular vehicle storage options is to store your vehicle in an enclosed parking structure.

Enclosing parking structures that offer vehicle storage for your car can be expensive for the length of time that you use them but they are a worthwhile investment for many reasons. First, enclosed parking structures are usually maintained by 24-hour security or completed secured by gate with access available only to those who pay to store their vehicles in the structure. Enclosed parking structures keep your car safe from the weather, theft and accidental damage that can result from being parked on the street or even in your garage.

States like Michigan offer vehicle storage for your traditional or classic vehicle to be kept safe throughout the winter season. This is very important if you want your car to be protected from the winter conditions that are prevalent in Michigan from around Thanksgiving to Easter, sometimes longer. Remember, no matter how you choose to keep your car safe, some form of vehicle storage is the best thing you can do for your car when it isn’t in use. Keeping your car safe maintains a longer life.

If you are looking for quality vehicle storage in Michigan, remember that vehicle storage facilities may fill up quicker as the winter months approach and it would be a good idea to get your vehicle storage unit selected and pay at least a deposit and a month or two of the rent to ensure that you will have a place to put your vehicle before the snow and other in climate weather comes.
