Whether you just have lots of miscellaneous stuff to store or you need room for a specific purpose, the range of utility sheds on the market provides a valuable addition to your living space.
We all tend to gather up belongings as we live our lives; hand and power tools, ladders, painting supplies, and so on accumulate along with the list of home improvement projects we tackle. Sporting goods like bicycles, kayaks, fishing rods, tennis rackets, and exercise equipment go in and out of use, and need to be stored, hopefully out of the way, when we’re not using them. Woodworkers and gardeners need space they can devote to their hobbies.
Luckily, a wide variety of preconstructed and build-it-yourself utility sheds can meet our storage and avocational needs. From giant plastic Rubbermaid sheds to beautifully designed wooden structures mimicking home designs to assemble-it-yourself kits, these sheds offer many ways to solve your storage problems.
Before you decide on a particular shed, spend some time assessing your storage needs. A good idea is to lay out the possessions you wish to store and actually measure the square footage you require. Include estimates of shelving you would need and decide whether you would have to resort to stand-alone shelves or whether you could create built-in shelving in the shed you are considering purchasing.
A little forethought will allow you to buy the perfect storage shed for yourself, and give you a way to keep all your valuable stuff safe and organized and keep your living area to yourselves.

I was looking at a Rubbermaid shed the other day and was struck by the care and quality that goes into sheds these days, even the cheap garden sheds many of us have in our backyards.
The old days when a wooden shed was about as good as it gets are long gone. Look around the gardens of your friends and neighbors. You will find metal sheds, plastic sheds and even vinyl sheds. Occasionally you’ll find a wooden one, but modern materials and manufacturing methods seem to have pushed the traditional lumber structures to one side.
This is not all a good thing, to my way of thinking.
What’s wrong with wood? It is long lasting. I remember the wooden storage sheds in our home and our neighbor’s when I was a boy. It lasted for several decades and ours would perhaps still be standing, only we sold the family home and it was carted off to a new lot with the shed and garage discarded and left behind.
Also, a wooden shed can be changed and adapted without any trouble. Need some more shelves? Just build them in! I did this in our garage recently, and was surprised at just how simple it was to take some old lumber and fashion it into a set of sturdy, useful shelves. Want a bench? Get out your tools and build one!
Try doing this in a metal shed. It’s possible, but you may need special, proprietary shelving or bench units from the shed manufacturer. Or in a plastic storage shed. That is just not possible.
In a wooden garden shed however, you just need some lumber, a saw and hammer.
A well maintained wooden shed will keep your garden area and backyard tidy and neat for many years.

Many do-it-yourselfers are so busy that they do not have the time to get all their tools and equipment properly organized. A great way to organize is with metal storage cabinets. They are sturdy enough to hold the repair persons tools of choice. It is a great way to keep things in order. In addition, they do not have to spend a lot of time searching for their tools when instead they could be working.
Metal storage cabinets are not only for storing tools in the garage or workshop. They can store documents and important files as well. This is a good idea since the cabinets are fireproof. Many come with locks if security is important for the individual or business. The design of these storage devices is generally quite simple. However, there are some very large and complex units available for the contractor or mechanic who has numerous tools. Thus, they could have a place to store almost everything.
Before you purchase your new metal storage cabinet, measure the available space you have. You want to make sure that it will actually fit when you get it home. If you do not wish to buy a new one, search the classified ads in your local paper or check the local online classifieds as well. There is usually someone downsizing or selling off a cabinet they no longer require. Another good place to search for a second hand system is an Estate sale, yard sale or public auction.
Well-designed metal storage cabinets can provide up to twice the amount of storage space as your basic shelving would. They are a great way for the unorganized person to develop some much-needed organization. These units are great for keeping dangerous tools out of the way of young children who would otherwise stumble upon them laying about the garage. Some drawers can also be locked to keep sharp objects out of the way as well. Safety features include a heavy-duty positive latching mechanism and steel welded on hinges, a padlocked handle and even stainless steel doors for maximum safety.
If you want a storage unit that lasts avoid plastic or Rubbermaid. Your best option is metal storage cabinets for a long lasting solution. They are also more durable and offer more value than the average plastic container. You will be more than pleased with how your garage will look after cleaning it up and storing things in your new cabinets.
If space in your garage is limited then you could setup your metal storage cabinets in a workshop or tool shed. Regardless of where you install them they will make your life a whole lot easier and organized. Many people will even label the drawers so they know what the contents are in each drawer. This may seem like a lot of work but consider how much time you spend looking for items and then it may seem like a good idea to you after all.

Keeping a garage organized and looking good is not always the easiest task to overcome. If you have a small garage, it is unfortunately that much harder to keep tools, sports equipment, trash cans, and outdoor furniture clean and organized. When you have a small garage, with an abundant amount of items that need to be stored, the best way to stay organized is to invest in storage equipment that can help you make the most of the space you are working with.
Most people reserve the bulk amount of interior space in their garage for one or more cars. This often leaves you with precious little space in which to keep all of the items that you want to keep stored in there. The trick in organizing any garage, especially a smaller one, is to find and use storage organizers that can help you make proper use of your wall and ceiling space. Since most of the floor space will be used for vehicles, using up the extra, free vertical space is the best way of getting equipment organized. For a small garage, there are plenty of wonderfully helpful types of storage containers and organizers that will help you make the most of your space.
Shelving and Cabinets
While shelves and cabinets can always be well-used in garages, when you have a smaller garage, you will need to become knowledgeable and choose carefully. The best option in a small garage is to select tall shelves that help you make use of the thin, vertical space you have open. Choose tall, free-standing garage shelves with four or more tiers so that you can stack multiple items on them. There are also items, such as stackable organizing cubes, that allow you to custom design your storage to fit your limited space.
If you need portable storage, your best bet is a folding utility cart. This helpful tool can be stored in flat form in the garage, and then folded out whenever you need it. These are perfect when you need a cart to take with you to the beach, picnics, and other outdoor events. These are also great for a permanent place in your garage since it enables a good amount of storage without taking up to much space.
Tools and Garden Equipment
Garden and maintenance tools can take up a lot of room in your garage, especially if they are not well organized. The simple solution, and the most practical for a small garage, is a wall-mounted tool rack that can effectively hold shovels, spades, rakes, hoes, forks, and any other items that you need for garden maintenance. Choose a rack that can hold a good amount of weight while being damp resistant, in case your garage usually gets wet during the rain.
Another great garden organizer must-have is a hose organizer. This wall-mounted organizer is definitely a great idea for a small garage as it allows your hose to remain un-tangled and un-punctured. For electrical extension cords, a Reel-A-Cord is the perfect solution with the capacity to store up to 175 feet of extensions.
Sports Equipment
Bats, balls, ski equipment, mitts, and gloves can take up a good amount of room in your garage. If your family is active and heavily into many different sports, it is likely that you have a good amount of sports equipment. In a small garage this can be an absolute nightmare to organize. Luckily, there are garage storage items such as the EZNET that can make it a lot easier to cope with. The EZNET is a fantastic wall-mounted, industrial strength, netted âhold-all,â that can serve as storage for a vast array of sporting equipment from balls to bats. It is perfect for a small garage since it is wall-mounted, and the flexible netting allows it to hold all equipment safely and securely.
For those families that love to bike, there are rolling bike stands that are ideal for any garage no matter what the size. The rolling bike stands have tiny wheels that allow you to easily move the bike around your garage without having to remove it from the stand.
Fishing Equipment
To keep fishing equipment organized safely is by no means an easy feat. Longer rods need support as well as safe storage to remain intact and ready for that next big family fishing trip. A couple of great options for storing fishing equipment in the garage are fishing rod racks, and wall-mounted fishing rod holders. The fishing rod rack is a great option if you have the space to spare. With a twelve-rod capacity, drawers to organize lures and other supplies, and four casters that allow you to roll the entire rack smoothly to wherever you need it, this is a perfect option. In a smaller garage, you might not have the floor space for that kind of rack. In this case, the next best solution is a wall-mounted fishing rod holder. With a six-rod storage capacity and a secure ceiling-mounted construction, this is perfect for smaller garages and can be installed anywhere.

Need fast and simple solutions for your garage organization problems? Here are seven tips to help you get that garage in order and organized for good.
Hanging Racks
Getting racks that you can hang from the rafters of your garage works great for a variety of items. This garage organization solution works especially well for bikes. It keeps them from taking away valuable floor space while still keeping them easily accessible.
Hooks
Hooks are a great solution for many garage items. Long handled items that have a hole in the end work well to hang on hooks. If you use tarps or any sort of cover for your car or grill, hanging these things on hooks in the garage when they are not in use works very well.
Pegboards
This is one of the best garage organization tips that there is. Pegboards are the most flexible and inexpensive garage organization tools that there is. You can easily change how your garage is organized just by changing where you put your pegboard holders.
When you do get it organized exactly the way you want, take a picture of it and hang the picture up next to the holders. Do this for every section of the garage that has pegboard holders. It works best to do this for each section of the pegboard rather than taking a picture of the entire thing.
Shelves
The best way to use shelves in your garage is for storing containers and smaller items. Make sure that whatever shelving you install will be able to handle the weight load of what you are going to put on it.
Keep sharp and dangerous items off the floor
This is one of those garage organization tips that seems obvious but which is not always easy to follow. Making sure that things like rakes and hoes get put in their proper place is important for safety. When these items end up on the floor, you can have an unpleasant surprise if you are not watching where you are walking. Always put back items in their proper place that are potentially dangerous.
Secure hazardous items
This is another one of those garage organization tips that has to do with safety, always an important topic when you are dealing with garage storage. Anything that is toxic to humans or animals should be kept in a secure area that small children and pets cannot reach. Things like paint, weed killers, bug sprays and gas all belong in this category. If you have pets that go in the garage and they can climb, this means putting these items in high cabinets that you can close. If you have children, it is always a good idea to let them know at a young age what is and is not dangerous in the garage.
Wall Tool Holders
These work well for weed trimmers, shovels, rakes, garden equipment and brooms. Having a wall tool holder not only helps keep these items organized but it also means that they stay off the floor.
