Storage Sheds – My Personal Insight

Posted by on Tuesday, March 16, 2010. Leave a Comment

I was looking at a Rubbermaid shed the other day and was struck by the care and quality that goes into sheds these days, even the cheap garden sheds many of us have in our backyards.

The old days when a wooden shed was about as good as it gets are long gone. Look around the gardens of your friends and neighbors. You will find metal sheds, plastic sheds and even vinyl sheds. Occasionally you’ll find a wooden one, but modern materials and manufacturing methods seem to have pushed the traditional lumber structures to one side.

This is not all a good thing, to my way of thinking.

What’s wrong with wood? It is long lasting. I remember the wooden storage sheds in our home and our neighbor’s when I was a boy. It lasted for several decades and ours would perhaps still be standing, only we sold the family home and it was carted off to a new lot with the shed and garage discarded and left behind.

Also, a wooden shed can be changed and adapted without any trouble. Need some more shelves? Just build them in! I did this in our garage recently, and was surprised at just how simple it was to take some old lumber and fashion it into a set of sturdy, useful shelves. Want a bench? Get out your tools and build one!

Try doing this in a metal shed. It’s possible, but you may need special, proprietary shelving or bench units from the shed manufacturer. Or in a plastic storage shed. That is just not possible.

In a wooden garden shed however, you just need some lumber, a saw and hammer.

A well maintained wooden shed will keep your garden area and backyard tidy and neat for many years.

There are many choices of storage sheds for gardens and garage in the market nowadays. Therefore, it is not easy to choose one that will best suit your needs. However, there are several criteria that you can consider when selecting one for your garden.

Storage sheds can be made of plastic, steel or even wood. If you have large budget, you may want to consider purchasing one which is made of metal because the price tend to be higher. However, those are made from quality plastic are also becoming more and more popular because of its light weight and modern outlook.

It is also important to consider the size of the shed that you are going to purchase. Obviously, the larger the shed, the more things that you can store inside. But you have to ensure that you have sufficient space for the shed.

If you intend to store items such as lawn mover, gardening tools, unused items in your kitchen or even your kid’s bicycles, then you need to have a larger storage shed that is at least 6 or 7 feet height. There more famous shed include those manufactured by Vinyl and Rubbermaid.

Why a Rubbermaid Storage Shed is Such a Great Choice

Posted by on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Leave a Comment

The word Rubbermaid always conjures up images of storage, so it’s no great surprise that Rubbermaid storage sheds are such a popular choice for when we need a bit more space to keep everything tidy. The only thing is, Rubbermaid have so many storage sheds to choose from. In this article I’ll try to simplify the options and help you choose the right one.

If you want extra storage space inside your home, then you’ll almost certainly want one of the modular storage sheds. For outside, you’ll likely be looking at something from the Big Max range.

The Big Max range of sheds come in 3 flavors. The smallest is Big Max Junior which is 6 foot by 3 foot. This is perfect if you just need somewhere to put your lawnmower, gardening equipment or garden tools. The middle shed is standard Big Max which measures 6 foot square and has 325 cubic feet of space. This is great for a large lawn mower, maybe some small step ladders or more garden tools. It will also take a shelf. The largest shed in the range is the Big Max Ultra. This one is almost small garage, it measures 6 feet by 10 feet and provides a huge 467 cubic feet of storage space. I’d say this will be more than enough room for your garden equipment or tools.

Every Big Max Rubbermaid shed is built to last. They all have a double walled construction which makes them strong and weather proof. They also have the Rubbermaid wall anchor system, so adding shelves is a breeze. For an outside storage container, Big Max sheds are difficult to beat.

If you need extra storage room inside your home, garage or a corner of your backyard, then a modular plastic storage shed might be a better choice.

Rubbermaid have a full selection, including their vertical storage sheds, horizontal storage sheds, and the split lid or slide lid sheds. Whichever size you need, you will find one to fit. You might want to take a look at the 3667 modular vertical shed. It’s especially useful because it has a set of double doors and an access ramp so you can wheel heavy items straight into the storage unit. You should be able to grab one of these for around $400.

One of the most popular sheds from Rubbermaid is the 3673 Double Deep Modular Vertical Shed. It has added room which enables outdoor items such as bicycles to easily sit inside. The 3752 Slide-Lid shed is a popular choice too. This one has an clever lid that slides all the way back so you can actually walk into the shed. This makes it easy for storing such things as bicycles, although it will be more suited to somewhere inside. Both of these sheds have a strengthened floor so you won’t have to worry about keeping heavy items in them.

Naturally, all of these Rubbermaid storage sheds are fully maintenance free and should last for years. It’s no surprise they have gained such a reputation. You can find most of the models I’ve mentioned online, so no need to delay, go find your ideal storage shed today.

Garage Cabinets Are Guaranteed Clutter Busters

Posted by on Thursday, January 14, 2010. Leave a Comment

Storage cabinets made out of metal not only protect your stuff but also reduce the litter and confusion in the house. These days many easy-to-assemble plastic, metal or wooden cabinets are available in the market and they are durable and financially viable. These economical cabinets are an excellent storage idea for keeping your tools, spare parts and garden equipment and other home improvement tools.

Very often we find we have misplaced the screwdriver just when we had to fix something or hunt for nails to put that painting up only to realize that they are nowhere to be found. Once you have a storage for tools you no longer have to hunt for these things as they would be stored in the right places and you just have to replenish your stocks, that’s all. Allen wenches, screwdrivers and paint brushes can be stored in shallow compartmentalized drawers instead of putting them into large deep drawers. Often used tools can be hung on pegs and stored that way instead of in drawers as it saves one the botheration of opening the drawer time and time again.

Sports stuff is usually piled in one corner of the garage which keeps getting bigger and bigger and one has to dig deeper and deeper to reach down and find what one is looking for. In most cases, Murphy’s Law applies and you’ll find what you want right at the very bottom. For this purpose plastic storage cabinets are ideal as they can take a lot of beating and rough treatment. These cabinets are very durable and strong and besides they don’t dent even if things are flung in roughly.

Every individual takes pride in his wine collection and the older it is the better it is. For wines, there are different storage racks where the bottles are laid horizontally in different slots to avoid settling. If you are a connoisseur of wines you could also set up temperature control thermostats that help you savor the wine and help age it too. A well-laid out, well-stocked wine cellar is any family’s pride.

Music and movies are an integral part of our lives and they can also be placed in structured, interesting looking cabinets made up of wood, Plexiglas or glass, offering up to 100 or 1000 slots to accommodate your movie and music CD or DVD collection. It’s a great way to bring order into your audio and video collection.

Outer storage is perfect for big implements like garden equipment or electric screwdrivers or cans that don’t fit into drawers. These cabinets provide the security and ease of garage storage and they come in various sizes and fittings. Whether you want shelving that’s enclosed or open depends on your needs and what you prefer. Open shelves do help in locating things faster and one can assign a shelf for each group. A few storage cabinets in strategic places and our lives suddenly become so much more organized. All it takes is a little planning and a bit of effort.

Stay Organized With A Garage Storage System

Posted by on Sunday, December 13, 2009. Leave a Comment

One of the worst feelings is knowing you have a quart or two of oil somewhere in your garage and not being able to find them among the scattered tools laying around. Garage storage systems can help keep everything in view as well as keep you safe from possible injury.

Rakes, shovels and hoes you may use outside may be stacked in a corner, threatening to fall onto your car, onto you, at the slightest provocation. Using cheap plastic garage storage systems can keep them safely in place and allow you to get the one you want without having to move them all.

For those with a lot more stuff, a more elaborate garage storage system will be needed. Using used kitchen cabinets has proven to be a success in the garage. Cabinets can be mounted on the wall and countertops, with storage spaces underneath, gives more room for tools and supplies as well as a work surface in your garage. However, not every garage will allow for the installation of large cabinet units.

Since cabinets can be mounted on the wall, this type of garage storage system can be set high enough to be out of the way for easy vehicle access and yet be useful for keeping other items in their proper place.

Be Careful Of Potential Flooding

Whether you choose old cabinets, a pre-built garage storage system or a custom designed and built one, consider the flooding potential of your garage before installing it. If your garage is prone to attract water on the floor, your base cabinet should be raised higher than the worst flooding you can expect. Additionally, nothing that can be destroyed by water should be stored near the ground.

Planning to store food items in your garage storage system should also be carefully considered. No food should be stored less than six inches from the ground to protect it from possible damage as well as be an attraction for animals you may not plan to feed. It would be best only to store canned goods in any garage storage system, regardless of its quality.

Thin metal shelves that hang from the ceiling can also be used to create an extra garage storage system as they can be hung over the space normally occupied by your vehicle. Close attention should be paid to the weight limits for these shelves, however to prevent their buckling or breaking damaging what is stored on them or anything those items might fall onto.
