Need Storage or Work Space? Consider a Utility Shed

Posted by on Sunday, March 21, 2010. Leave a Comment

Whether you just have lots of miscellaneous stuff to store or you need room for a specific purpose, the range of utility sheds on the market provides a valuable addition to your living space.

We all tend to gather up belongings as we live our lives; hand and power tools, ladders, painting supplies, and so on accumulate along with the list of home improvement projects we tackle. Sporting goods like bicycles, kayaks, fishing rods, tennis rackets, and exercise equipment go in and out of use, and need to be stored, hopefully out of the way, when we’re not using them. Woodworkers and gardeners need space they can devote to their hobbies.

Luckily, a wide variety of preconstructed and build-it-yourself utility sheds can meet our storage and avocational needs. From giant plastic Rubbermaid sheds to beautifully designed wooden structures mimicking home designs to assemble-it-yourself kits, these sheds offer many ways to solve your storage problems.

Before you decide on a particular shed, spend some time assessing your storage needs. A good idea is to lay out the possessions you wish to store and actually measure the square footage you require. Include estimates of shelving you would need and decide whether you would have to resort to stand-alone shelves or whether you could create built-in shelving in the shed you are considering purchasing.

A little forethought will allow you to buy the perfect storage shed for yourself, and give you a way to keep all your valuable stuff safe and organized and keep your living area to yourselves.

Transform Your Garage Into An Element of Your Home

Posted by on Sunday, January 24, 2010. Leave a Comment

When your living space is starting to appear smaller and smaller as your family starts to expand, possibly it’s time for you to think about the option of remodeling to increase your place. You don’t have to get rid walls just to get that extra space you require, but instead, you can select to have some unused space in your home to be transformed into something habitable. A sound place to start is your garage and there are a whole heap of possibilities that can transform your garage into an element of your home with no topmost renovations. Renovating your garage means that you can attain yet an extra space that can be transformed into rooms without having to exhaust so much on construction fees.

Houses with remodeled garage have the added space advantage and the return on investment is amazingly high. In this day and age, a lot of people prefer homes with renovated garage, which are a part of the entire structure. The garage is gradually but surely becoming an element of the home rather than an isolated parking spot or storage space. Garage remodeling can be a clever choice if you don’t park your car in the garage anymore but instead, you leave it outside in your driveway. Using this specific space can be very satisfying both for you and your family because you will be able to gain another living quarter or perhaps an office without having to build another space.

If you want extra space, your best choice is garage remodeling. Since the garage has been the most deserted part of the house, all the junk and useless items are placed there. As a consequence, your garage becomes a cluttered junkyard where retrieving a single item can be a venture in itself. There are many advantages to renovating your garage. Whatever intent you have in mind for your old garage, you can hire the aid of experts who can actually renovate your garage for you while implementing impressive ideas and turning your garage into a valuable and organized room. There is much furniture that can be set up in your driveway like garage cabinets, bendable wall systems and appliances to complement your recently designed space. You can alter it into a sleek and luxurious living quarter or into a rugged but contemporary entertainment room complete with audio and video systems and other appliances.

You can also place a refrigerator there that is exclusively designed for varying temperatures all year round. Another benefit to remodeling a garage is that it boosts the value of your property. With a renovated garage, you actually gained another room without going through major alterations within your house or having to add an extension to your house, thus decreasing your lot size. The garage remodeling option can really save you plenty of money, while gaining that extra space that’s so desired in today’s contemporary homes. The procedure also saves you a lot of time as you can remodel a garage all year round, rather than having to wait for extreme weather conditions to pass. A full garage remodeling project can take up to one week whereas remodeling another art of your house may take several weeks or months.

Garage remodeling organizes the home, increases storage space and creates a pleasant additional space for the home and it is also the quickest method of adding space to your house. All the mess and unnecessary items are removed and since your garage, after remodeling, is now a completely new living space, you will not be inclined to plunk your trash there, but instead use your new garage storage space to organize all your belongings. That is why a garage alteration is constantly a huge option for those who are in constant need of more space but are not too eager to sacrifice the time, resources and personal participation in renovating a different section of the home.

Garage Overhead Storage: The Pros & Cons

Posted by on Saturday, January 16, 2010. Leave a Comment

Garage overhead storage may be the best thing for you to use in your garage for your organizational needs, or it may not. If you are like millions of other homeowners who have garages filled with stuff, you are likely interested in using the best storage solution you can find. Nobody likes a cluttered mess, and a garage is so easy to just let go because most people don’t even think of it as a part of the actual living space of their home. Rather, they see it, and use it, as nothing more than a large storage unit and general dump all. Whether storing things overhead is best for you depends on your interpretation of the pros and cons.

Some of the Pros of garage overhead storage:

Allows you to free up space on the floor. Having to constantly negotiate your way around the things that tend to clutter a garage can be absolutely irritating, not to mention dangerous. Roller blades, bikes and basketballs just aren’t a good mix when they are constantly under foot. Seasonal items, like Christmas decorations, are needed for such a small time of the year that it just makes sense to get them up and out of the way for most of the year. Putting those bins up in the available space above just makes good sense. Ease of access. Most garage overhead storage systems are easily operated because of the power of leverage. With ropes and pulleys, almost anyone can raise and lower the platform that some of these systems use.

Some of the Cons of garage overhead storage:

Not all overhead storage systems are the same. While some have ropes and pulleys that lift the platforms full of boxes and stuff up out of the way, others are bins that ride on rails installed on the ceiling. Or stationary shelves that hang from the ceiling. Both of these have to be accessed by ladder or step-stool. This is not practical for some homeowners. A better solution might be shelving or modular wall units that are easier to get at. Human nature being what it is, there might be a tendency to simply fill up the newly created space underneath the garage overhead storage with more stuff, rather than leaving it free and clear. Unless you are committed to leaving free space alone, you may want to think twice about just putting things overhead. It will be difficult to access if the space below is filled with stuff, regardless of the type of system you use. Some systems are a bit trickier to install, especially the pulley systems. While the cost of most overhead garage storage is not prohibitive, some does tend to be a bit more expensive than what some other options cost. If money is a factor in your decision, then you’ll want to carefully think about this. Of course, the money you spend on any eventual solution is going to be money well spent if you do your homework.

There may be other considerations for your particular situation that only you know about. Depending on the size of your garage, other storage opportunities you have available to you, or your personal preferences for ease of access to stored items, you may find that overhead garage storage would be a perfect option for you. If not, that’s okay too, because there are many other storage systems and products available on the market.

Top 5 Reasons to use your Garage Overhead Storage

Posted by on Friday, January 15, 2010. Leave a Comment

I am not sure when it all started, maybe in 1986 with Lionel Richie’s hit song, “Dancing on the Ceiling”. Perhaps a young child looked up and dreamt about dancing or walking on the ceiling, and though they may never have actually done that, they did realize that the ceiling had potential for other uses, like storage. Maybe someone discovered the use of ceiling space before then, I really don’t know. But I do know that there are a multitude of garage overhead storage options available today.

These options come in a couple of different forms. From shelves that hang, bolted from the ceiling, to pulley systems that you can use to lower and raise a shelf, to special tracks which allow you to hang everyday storage bins. But regardless of what type of garage overhead storage system works best for you, they all have some of the same basic advantages. Here are five reasons why you may want to use your ceiling space for storage.

Whether you own or rent a home, if you have a garage, you have space that you already “own”, so we should utilize all out space in the most efficient way possible. All garages have ceilings or rafters, so it makes sense to use them. Sure, if you have rafter, you can balance some items above them, such as skis or sleds, but a hanging shelf will hold a lot more stuff in a wider variety of shapes and sizes. Many people have so much stuff that they don’t know what to do with, that they go and rent a storage unit. If you already have a garage, this does not make sense. As mentioned above, you are already paying for your living space, why pay more to store your stuff elsewhere? If you can store items in garage overhead storage instead of paying for self storage, you will save money. After all, most garage overhead storage systems can be paid for with the cost of only a few months worth of self storage. Another great advantage of garage overhead storage compared to a storage unit, is that you can access your things at any time without leaving home. Sure, it is not as quick to access as a regular shelf, but it doesn’t take that much effort – definitely quicker and easier than traveling to a storage unit. > If you are like I have been, your indoor closet space is filled to capacity and beyond! Get things like keep sakes and seasonal items out of your closets and into garage overhead storage. They are the perfect storage solution for items that only have to be accessed occasionally. Finally, the best reason to use garage overhead storage is to free up your garage so that your car can fit inside! So many garages become a catch all, that only 32% of people with a two car garage can fit one car inside, and 25% of two car garage owners can’t fit any car into their garage! Winter is coming quick, and you know that you don’t want to have to scrape the frost and snow from your car. Reclaim your garage now, and overhead garage storage is the perfect solution for part of this problem.

So, regardless of the type of garage overhead storage system that you use, it is easy to see that there are reasons why almost anybody would benefit.

3 Ways To Design Your Own Garage

Posted by on Thursday, January 14, 2010. Leave a Comment

If you have decided to design your own garage, either by constructing a completely new one or by remodeling and existing one on your property, you are probably in search of ideas. Even if you know what features you want to incorporate when you design your own garage, you may not have the technical expertise to work them into a building plan, but don’t want the expense of paying a contractor to prepare the plan for you. Do you have alternatives?

Yes, and a wide variety of them. You can begin by investigating the different software programs available which will give you all the help you need to design your own garage blueprints. One of the better-known software programs is Plan3D.

Software Programs

You can subscribe to Plan3D online and, for a small monthly fee, use their service to design your own garage with all the features you want, and then view both its interior and exterior from every conceivable angle. If you’d like to design your own garage from plans you found elsewhere, you can even scan them to thePlan3D program and get a clear picture of how the finished garage will look in three dimensions.

If you don’t have any idea of where to find plans from which you can design your own garage, you can again do an online search. Many online companies have libraries of garage plans available for immediate downloading; these plans will include not only blueprints, but complete instructions on the materials you’ll need to get your garage constructed.

Finding Garage Plans Online

Homeplans.com is one such site, which in addition to having hundreds of plans for houses, has plans for both garages with workshops and garages with living space from which you can get ideas to design your own garage. For more info see http://www.garageplanshelp.com/Garage_Storage/ on Garage Storage.

Prefab Garage Kits

If you think you’d not only like to design your own garage, but construct it as well, look into the many prefabricated garage kits now available. Built from galvanized steel, they come prepared to assemble and can usually be constructed in les than a day with three or four people working on them.

If you do not have the necessary manpower to assemble a prefab garage, many manufacturers can provide construction crews for an additional expense. You will have to check with your zoning board to find out if steel structures are permitted in you area, and what dimensions are acceptable for garages. You’ll also have to pour a foundation for the unit, to provide it with extra stability.

You can have a hand in the design of your own garage by telling the prefab company what features you’d like to incorporate in the unit. You can further customize it by choosing among the many available styles and colors.

Self Storage Options in Alabama

Posted by on Tuesday, January 5, 2010. Leave a Comment

Self storage is a good option for you if any aspect of your life has seemed to overflow into your living space, and you just don’t know where to put it all. Self storage options in Alabama can be a good solution even for those who own homes with lots of storage space inside, and storage in outbuildings like sheds or garages. No matter how much space you have, it seems, it’s all too easy to find yourself trying to dig out from underneath a mountain of “stuff.”

Renters and those who lease might have an even harder time finding a place for everything, depending on how much space is available to them. Small apartments don’t leave much room for storage, and often even those buildings that do have a storage space for renters only has a small space available to be shared among all the tenants. Self storage is a way to get the things out of your way without giving them up, or worrying about too-small storage in your building or other people having access to the same area.

Self storage options in Alabama can help you get control of your “stuff,” get organized, and maybe even help you further by giving you some breathing room at your home or business, and figuring out what you can part with to make storing your stuff even easier.

You might want self storage for things like business paperwork archives, unused furniture that you want to keep or can’t decide what to do with, boxes of stuff you need to sort to figure out what you’ll do with each item you can use self storage for any of these items, and more. Many self storage options in Alabama can be used for a month or for years; that depends on your and your needs. And the size of your self storage space is individual, too.

Self storage options in Alabama let you rent storage space. But the difference between self storage and the traditional types of storage people used to have to use to store items away from their own property is that you control your storage. You’re responsible for bringing your own items to the storage facility, putting them in your personal storage area, and locking the storage behind you.

In fact, most self storage companies don’t even provide a lock for your unit. You purchase your own padlock. While this might seem like an added expenses or hassle, remember-if you provide your own lock, no one else has a key. It’s an added measure of security for you and your things.

Also, no one else gets in your things. You don’t have to go through anyone to retrieve items from storage or put items in. And you can go almost any time, as long as the facility itself is open. You may not be able to go at certain times because the entire property is gated, for instance. If you need to be able to access your things at hours when you think they might not be open, examine your self storage options in Alabama and find a company with more flexible hours.

Anytime they’re open, you can get into your storage unit at will. The company doesn’t need to know what you access, or whether you remove or add anything. It’s a very private way to store your things.

When you’re looking at your self storage options in Alabama, you’ll want to compare prices and hours, of course. But don’t forget to compare security. It might be worth a little longer drive to another town to store your important items in a self storage facility with better security than the cheaper, closer facility.

Even the best lock can be cut off, and that could happen even if the storage was in your own backyard. But if the self storage facility has good security, it’s probably not something you’ll ever need to worry about.

Go to several facilities and really investigate your storage options. Make sure they look secure, and ask about things like fire alarms and a smoking policy-smoking should be forbidden on the property to prevent everyone’s stored items from going up in smoke. Ask about general alarm systems and security. Look at some facilities at night to see if they’re lit well enough to discourage would-be thieves. Don’t settle for a questionable company. You probably have dozens of self storage options in Alabama, so make a careful choice to best protect your stored items.

Storage Ideas

Posted by on Friday, January 1, 2010. Leave a Comment

There are many reasons why people need self storage. They range from creating more space for living to temporarily having no home at all. The reasons also vary from country to country. Let’s examine some of the main reasons why people need and use self storage.

Selling a home:

Self storage can be of great use when selling your home. It is not a well kept secret that the less cluttered your home is the more spacious it appears. This appearance of extra living space in your home can translate into more interested buyers and a significantly higher sale price. This is why one of the first recommendations you will receive from your real estate agent prior to putting your home on the market is to “de clutter” your home.

This often involves packing away unnecessary ornamentals, old lounges and furniture that are really not needed in the home. Some home owners even go the extreme of storing everything they own and renting newer more modern furniture and plants just for the sale period. Some self storage facilities offer a free no obligation quote at your home to accurately assess the storage space you will need and can even provide a removal solution.

People who hoard:

The desire to “hold on to things” goes back many centuries and in extreme cases can be referred to as hoarding. Hoarding is about the fear of throwing something away that you might need someday or that if thrown away will cause a problem. More recently our grand parents and great grand parents who experienced the great depression of the 1930′s have passed down the need to protect and acquire possessions that they themselves once lost. There are many examples in the self storage industry of people renting a storage space so they can continue to collect items that they can no longer store in their home.

Hoarding can cause problems in the family home due to a reduction in the actual living space. Self storage offers these customers an opportunity to clear some space at home and still fulfill their need for retaining and gathering items. Because self storage can be rented on a month by month basis it is easy for customers to increase or decrease the amount of storage space they need. It is not uncommon for individuals to have 2 or more storage units which they often visit to look through their “stuff”. Extended hours access at most storage facilities gives customers the flexibility to visit their storage units when it is convenient for them.

Building a new home:

Most people who have built a new home have done it, yes move in with in laws for a period of time while the new home is being built. However, it is quite rare that our accommodating family will have the space needed to store all our prized possessions. People using secure self storage to store all of their belongings while they build a new home is very common.

Most customers who use self storage during this period like the flexibility of month to month renting due to the uncertainty of when their new home will be completed. Customers also like the fact that they can increase their storage space at any time allowing them extra room to purchase and store new furniture for their home. Some self storage facilities will even receive deliveries of new furniture directly into your storage space on your behalf.

Due to the nature of building a home, storage for this purpose is often at least 3 to 6 months or more. Some storage facilities offer prepayment discount solutions for 3, 6, 9 and 12 months payments in advance. Alternatively you can arrange to have your payment automatically deducted each month from your credit card.

Divorce:

It is unfortunate but marriage breakdowns and high divorce rates are becoming more prevalent in today’s society. It is often the case where one person is forced to leave the family home and needs to store the items that were solely theirs. This can often include a car and the contents of the garage. Most storage facilities deal with these situations regularly with discretion and privacy. Should you need to store a car you should check with the storage facility to see if this type of space is available. Most times cars are stored in a lock up garage space but alternatively there may be opportunities to store it in a secured outside space.

Most customers in this situation have a tough emotional time and the need for storage can be sudden. A good self storage company will have trained team members who will have an empathetic and caring approach and provide a complete storage solution including quote, move and store at very short notice.

Traveling:

People often choose to travel for either work or pleasure for up to twelve months or more. With their house often unoccupied during this period they feel more secure placing their treasured possessions into a secure self storage facility. If the move overseas is work related often the company pays the bills and will require quotes. A good self storage company will be able to visit your home, provide a free quote and submit it professionally to the company responsible for making the payments.

Because 12 months is a long time you need to ensure that you save money where possible while also storing at a safe and secure location. The best way to secure the right size and price is to have an experienced self storage consultant come to your home to provide a free no obligation quote. This ensures that you will only get the space you need and will not be paying for additional unused space. Your storage consultant will be able to advise you on the best way to store your belongings for the long term and how to box and wrap them for maximum protection. Click here for information on boxes and wrapping materials. Ask your storage consultant to bring along some samples of boxes, tapes and wrapping materials to show you.

Death in the family:

It is a sad fact of life that at some stage we will all experience the death of a loved one. Many a storage consultant have had the melancholy task of assisting family members store the belongings of a deceased relative when no other options were available. Often time is needed to sort through their affairs and belongings and so a month or two of storage can relieve additional pressures during this difficult time. Storage consultants can help make this difficult task as hassle free as possible by organising everything including removal and packing with just one call.

Moving back into the family home:

So the kids leave the nest and you have all this spare room to do with what ever you want. And you do by creating a study and an entertainment area, not to mention your own in house storage area. Then 12 months later you get the phone call “Mum it has not worked out and I need to come home”. You can rustle up a bed but where is your son or daughter going to put all of their recently acquired possessions?

Self storage is the perfect solution. Because siblings often move in and out of home a few times before settling down, self storage allows them the flexibility to store their belongings just for the period required and when needed they can get it all out and move again. Some storage facilities have a free move in trailer and driver service which is very popular among young people who can’t afford removalists and have not got too much furniture to move. Big Box Free Truck and Trailer Photo

Lifestyle and hobbies:

Some people decide to use storage to improve their way of life. This is particularly the case in Asian countries where living space is at a premium and having a storage unit is just like having a garden shed. It is merely an extension of their home. While this form of storage is not as prevalent in Australia it still exists in the more densely populated cities where apartments and living space in general are smaller and more expensive.

Self storage can also provide those with elaborate hobbies the space to indulge in their favourite past times away from the mischievous hands of children or unsympathetic partners. This may include building trains and tracks, collecting and reading comics or simply storing your valuable coin or stamp collections. With extended access hours to visit your storage space, excellent security and a variety of different sized units to choose from at reasonable rates, self storage can provide that extra space you have always wanted.

So there you have it. These are some of the main reasons why people need to use self storage. The benefits of taking advantage of self storage are more than just peace of mind but often a sense of relief that your affairs are sorted and you are free to get on with living without your possessions tying you down.

Using Self-Storage During a Move

Posted by on Wednesday, December 30, 2009. Leave a Comment

So a move is in store? Congratulations! There are so many items that you need to consider when you are getting ready to move that it is difficult to keep track of everything. It’s a great idea to purchase a small planner or move-planning sheet that will help you organize all the tasks that are ahead of you.

For many of those tasks, a self storage unit will be an invaluable asset.

Sometimes called mini storage – particularly at businesses that offer only smaller storage units – a self storage unit is extra storage space, away from your home or business, that offers you a space to store any items you need to pack away for a period of time.

This kind of storage unit is perfect for short or long term storage, since they are typically monitored 24/7 and provide you with extra security, such as computer-controlled entry, electric gates, and personal locks of whatever strength you wish to utilize.

Preparing for a Home Sale

When you prepare to sell a home, one of the first things a real estate agent will do is walk you through your own home and help you see the home as it will be viewed by potential buyers.

The agent will point out not only dated carpets and curtains, but also the clutter and mess that accumulates through normal life and fails to appeal to potential buyers. The agent will likely suggest that you remove any clutter.

Many times, removing clutter means eliminating extra furniture from living space, cleaning closets and thinning out the clothing and shoes in the closets, and winnowing out children’s toys. If you have an extra car in the garage or an RV or boat in the driveway, the agent will likely recommend removing these vehicles to increase the curb appeal of the home.

You’ll be told to remove any storage boxes business records, tax records, receipts, old magazines or books, college papers, the kids’ artwork from grade school; it should all be removed from the home to add to the visual appeal and roominess.

Some people transfer these items to the garage and fill it so much that the cars can’t fit into it. This defeats the purpose of de-cluttering the home, makes it look like the garage is very small, and creates the feel that the home isn’t large enough to handle all of a person’s belongings.

After a sale, there are many situations that may demand self storage. If the buyer needs to move in before you can transfer to your new home, you’ll need somewhere to stash your belongings. If you are moving to a new location but do not yet have a home, this also presents a difficulty.

The answer to these dilemmas is a storage rental.

What to Rent
First look at how much you need to store. The easiest way to look at this is by boxes or by pickup loads. For example, a 5′ x 5′ storage unit will hold about 1 pickup load of material or about 50 standard file boxes. A 5′ x 5′ unit is 25 square feet (relatively small), so you can figure the larger units based on this standard.

A 10′ x 10′ unit, then, is 100 square feet, or four times as large as the 5′ x 5′, therefore it can hold 4 pickup loads or 200 boxes.

Climate Control Storage
Decide if you need climate control storage. Storage units with climate control are in a self-contained building with heating and cooling units to maintain a steady temperature and humidity.

If your items are valuable, sensitive to temperature changes, or irreplaceable, then you may want to consider climate control. You may have a small unit featuring climate controlled storage for photographs, electronic equipment and important tax records, and a larger, less expensive unit for the clothing, books, and toys.

Long Term Storage
If the market is bad or you’re not sure how long it will be before you find a new home, you may want to make arrangements for long-term storage in a unit. This generally means you have limited access to your items, but often at a lower price.

This is an option many people use after they arrive in a new area and still need to find, close, or build a home in the new area.
