Garage remodeling is when you transform that almost neglected part of your house that your wife and children do not even dare to enter. Remodeling of garage is more efficient today because of recently developed garage organizing and storage systems. Remodeling of your garage is very important aspect of the home remodeling. It is probably the quickest way to add much needed space to your home.

If you are considering any sort of home repair this may just be the one that should be first on your list, because it is often the most visible exterior element of a home. Its no wonder that garage remodeling is getting a closer looks from homeowners. How to deal with a cluttered garage is an issue faced by every family at some point and garage remodeling and organization are among the most popular solutions. Therefore, the first important step in garage remodeling is to empty out the garage completely of its contents.

Door

The garage door is beginning to get more attention from todays homeowners as garage remodeling is becoming more important to them. To give you some idea of what you might be looking at, a new garage door usually costs somewhere around $1,000, and a garage storage system is another $1,000. For garage door tips, consider changing your old garage door. Newer garage doors are more secure and make better use of technology for safety and security.

An old door and opener could be a real threat for your children playing near the garage. The door needs to be maintained every now and then to ensure its continued safe use. When a door and opener gets really old, periodic maintenance gets even more expensive as some worn out parts would have to be replaced. The best way to go is to replace that old door and opener with a new one. Aside from looking better and saving on maintenance costs, these doors and openers contain better technology than the old one you have right now.

Nevertheless, a home survey found that the garage door is now the most used exterior door when entering the home for both men 44 percent and women 42 percent. The front door was close behind as the second most used exterior door. Wood composite garage doors can also be embellished with stylish details such as unique trim designs, beautiful woodgrain patterns, decorative hardware, multi planked grooves and a variety of window inserts to help bring more natural light into the garage.

Floor

However, for more extensive and lasting renovations that include insulation, flooring, soundproofing, electrical wiring and plumbing, you will probably need to hire a general contractor who can plan and oversee your garage renovation. Garages are notorious for being functional, yet unattractive, dull concrete floors, rough looking exposed beams and a general lack of organization are often the culprits. Some careful storage planning, a little drywall and may be a bit of epoxy floor covering can truly make a less than incredible garage into something worth showing off. As part of your garage remodeling process you may wish to give attention to the garage floor.

Generally speaking, these floors are made from concrete and often detract from the appearance of the garage due to various stains. However, there are a number of methods that can be utilized to give attention to the garage floor. One of these methods can be the application of paint to the garage floor. Another method of sprucing up a garage floor is through the use of a durable garage flooring product. It is strongly suggested that if utilizing this method of refinishing the garage floor that professional installers be contracted with.

Space

While garages main use is to store the car, you can also use the garage as a storage area. If you are thinking about expanding your garage area by diminishing the garden area, then this idea works for you. If a potential home buyer has always wanted their own work space, your garage remodel could be the thing that sells your home. The nature of your work space will determine what renovations are needed. Be sure to build a play space, whether it is a poker table, pool table, ping pong table or football table, a remodeled garage can be a mecca of home entertainment. Whether you need to de clutter the garage itself or want to use the space to transfer items out of the main part of your home, the garage is a common place for home storage.

Conclusion

While kitchen and bathroom remodeling continue to lead the way in home improvement projects, garage remodeling is beginning to come its own as more and more homeowners decide to use their garages for more than just storing their vehicles. Garage remodeling can be a home improvement strategy that provides many benefits to homeowners.

They can be remodeled into a new store place where you can make out some place for storing other homely accessories. Garages are very important part of the house and have equal importance such as the other sections of the house. Garage remodeling is probably the quickest way to add much needed space to your home. Garage remodels do not average the same rate of return, although they do certainly increase the value of your home.

How to Organize Your Garage for Spring

Posted by on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Leave a Comment

As springtime approaches, people’s thoughts naturally turn to cleaning, and getting homes in shape for the warmer weather. During the warmer months, families tend to entertain more, opening their homes up to friends, family and neighbors to enjoy. It can be fun and exciting to feel the renewing experience of shaking winter from our bones and getting our homes clean and organized to enjoy the warmth, sights and smells of spring and summer.

Despite these positive and enthusiastic feelings, there are some challenges in spring cleaning which can create a sense of dread. For many homeowners, this sense of dread is connected with their garage, and the horrors that lurk within. Cleaning the garage, getting it organized, and maintaining that organization, is perhaps one of the most difficult (and most avoided) home organization jobs.

The garage is often dirty, crowded, and maybe even damp, making it a somewhat unpleasant place to be at the tail-end of winter. In many cases, garage organization is put off until “next month,” but that can really mean the job is put off altogether, until you start thinking about spring cleaning the following year.

Garage organization is often avoided not simply because it is an unpleasant task but because the garage is cold and damp during the late winter months. Also, the garage might be difficult to maneuver in if you are storing summer furniture such as deck chairs. A garage can accumulate a large number of random items, especially if you’ve been living in your home for a few years. Many of us simply deal with the mess and clutter in the garage by piling more things in the space, hoping we will be able to remember where everything is! As you accumulate more items in your garage the process of cleaning and organizing starts to feel extremely intimidating, simply because there is so much to be done.

So how do you avoid wasting time and energy hunting down items stored in your garage? How do you organize your garage properly, and keep it that way?

Getting your Garage into Shape

The first step in getting your garage organized is to simply bite the bullet and start, instead of continually putting it off. Set aside several days you know you have free (they don’t have to be consecutive) and plan to make a start on the garage on those days. Make sure you know you can give the project your undivided attention for the days you schedule for garage cleaning.

For your first garage organization session, take stock of everything in the space and decide what you want to keep. Make an inventory of all items in the garage, and at the same time, decide what you want to keep, throw away, donate, or sell. Keep in mind that your garage has limited space, and that the accumulation of unnecessary items might very well be what got your garage into this mess in the first place!

Your next garage session will be all about cleaning up the space. Give the walls and floors a thorough scrub, and if necessary, clean up items stored in the garage as well. Dust off items and, if the garage is known to get damp in winter, use an anti-mold treatment on walls and floors.

Once you’ve taken inventory, de-cluttered the garage, and cleaned up the space, the next step is putting it all back again. However, this time, the idea is to store your items in an organized fashion.

At this stage in the process, it is time to start thinking about storage solutions for your garage. Shelving, boxes, racks, caddies, tool storage, cabinets and drawers, can all make garage storage a breeze, and ensure that your garage stays organized in the long term. With good garage storage, you can eliminate the stress and wasted time that goes along with having to hunt down items that have become lost.

When considering storage options, a good idea is to think “up.” Take advantage of the vertical space in your garage, and choose wall storage options such as shelving, wall racks, tall drawer cabinets, and wall-mounted tool storage. With a high-ceilinged garage you may even be able to take advantage of ceiling storage by having certain items hung from above.

Good Organization is all about Maintenance

Of course, it’s not enough to organize your garage and then forget about it. Keeping the garage organized and clean is an ongoing process. However, keeping the garage organized is fairly easy. Just follow these three simple rules to keep the items in your garage neat and organized:

When you buy items that will be stored in the garage, find a storage spot for each item as soon as you bring it home. When you use an item from the garage, return it to its storage spot as soon as you’re done with it. Clean up spills ASAP when they occur.

A garage is much more than just a parking place for your automobiles. Depending upon the family and the layout, the garage has become equal parts storage space, workshop, and meeting place, and the proper use of space in any of these pursuits is essential. At Garage Outfitters, we’re making the most of the space available at ground level and overhead with the finest in garage cabinets, garage flooring, overhead storage, garage accessories including storage containers, Handiwall, and more. Whereas others make their storage cabinets from particle board and cheap plastics, we use durable, environmentally thermo-fused plywood as our main building component. The result of our unique modular platform is functional and plentiful storage space that is great looking, durable, and affordable. Furthermore, our overhead storage units make additional space available that you might not have even known you had. Imagine items such as luggage, coolers, holiday decorations and more out of sight and out of mind until they are necessary instead of cluttering up your garage. And for avid cyclists, our mountable bicycle racks promote convenience and order in your garage.

On the surface of things, we’ll make sure your garage floor is protected against the elements for years to come. Our garage floor coatings are available in a variety of looks and colors, and go the extra mile in coating and protecting your garage floor due to the fact that they are polyaspartic. The History and the Future of Garage Organizer Systems

Posted by on Monday, January 18, 2010. Leave a Comment

The original garage organizer system was just some basic shelves that were put up along the garage walls, usually just using scraps of plywood and pine that were lying around the house. I have to admit, this is still the type of garage organizer that we use today. It works fairly well for boxes, but not good for all the miscellaneous, odd shaped items that end up in the garage.

After basic shelves, came the evolution of a utility shelf. Often made out of metal or heavy duty plastic, and the plastic ones usually break completely down to shelves and supports. We have some of these also, both the plastic type that break down as well as heavy duty metal shelves.

Along with these basic shelves, we have the everyday cabinet that can be found in many ordinary garages. The garage organizer cabinet is usually made of metal or particle board. We have the particle board variety which is heavy and will be ruined if it gets wet. But it is very good for storing paint, stain, fertilizer and other household chemicals.

But in the last 15 to 20 years, the garage organizer has evolved into full systems. These systems range from grouped cabinets of various sizes and configurations to wall slat systems that are very versatile. These wall systems can hold a variety of different hooks, shelves, baskets, caddies etc. that can hold an entire multitude of items from gardening tools to sports items to seasonal goodies to tools and bikes.

It seems like that would max out the ideas for garage organizers, but then somebody realized that there was an entire ceiling that was going unused. There are multiple overhead systems that take advantage of this fact, from a shelf that hangs from the ceiling (some on a pulley system) to special tote holders.

So with this innovative idea in mind, it made me wonder what will come next? What does the future garage organizer look like? Perhaps rotating shelves where everything has its own place, and it would be fully computerized. Just punch into the computer what you are looking for, and the shelves and cabinets would mechanically rotate until the desired item was front and center.

Perhaps some of the cabinets could even be kept in the crawl space above the garage and would robotically come down through a trap door when you did a search on the garage organizer computer system.

Better yet, think of Star Trek the Next Generation. You just walk up to a contraption built into the wall and say like Jean Luc Picard, “Tea, Earl Gray”, or more appropriately, “Stain, Dark Walnut” and the item would instantly appear. The question is, do you store everything willy nilly in the crawl space and attic, or are they just molecules floating somewhere in space to reassemble when called upon. On Star Trek, I used to wonder if they had a storage hold full of anything you could possible need to appear when summoned, but I am pretty sure it was the latter molecular scenario.

Star Trek may not be the future of garage organizer systems, but it will be interesting to see what does evolve. But for right now, there are some great systems available to improve your garage storage needs.

But perhaps we won’t need a garage, because cars will be obsolete. Beam me up Scotty!

Garage Organizers Take Away All Your Excuses

Posted by on Monday, January 18, 2010. Leave a Comment

Garage organizers are not all created equal, not by a long shot. When you have stuff to store, but not enough space to store it in, then you know a lot about storage – or the lack of it. Many garages are used to solve this problem with simple plywood shelves. This works, but isn’t very attractive. It also isn’t very efficient. There really isn’t all that much difference between a pile of stuff on the floor and a pile of stuff on a shelf. It can be nearly as frustrating and as equally irritating. Creating a truly organized garage space takes a little bit of planning and thought. Once you’ve figured out exactly what you need to organize, then you can purchase the appropriate organization solution for your garage. Assuming that you’ve figured out your needs, here are some possible organizers for your consideration.

First, you could opt for something as basic as garage organizer cabinets that can be mounted on the wall, or put on rollers and left on the floor. These are really nice because they allow you to store items on shelves, then hide them out of site behind doors. No more embarrassment when friends and family go out to your garage. But you can do more, way more.

Garage organizers go way beyond simple shelves or even cabinets. Another one of the more popular solutions for garage storage is adjustable wall rack systems. Companies like Gladiator, Bench Solution, Flow Wall, or NewAge VersaTrac all make various wall track systems that are truly customizable and versatile. Think about all that stuff that clutters up your garage that just doesn’t fit in a cabinet or on a shelf. Hoses, rakes, shovels, brooms, roller blades, rackets, weed trimmers, etc. With a wall system you can adjust the racks and hooks so that you can make a truly functional and customizable space. Yard tools no longer have to plague your life. Don’t you hate the way they start out stacked in a corner, but somehow find a way to creep out onto the floor and invariably get in the way? Say goodbye to that little problem forever!

As a large active family, we have lots of bikes and sports equipment to manage. Rather then just have all those things rolling, bouncing, and lying around, we’ve found that overhead garage organizers are a simple, but important part of our garage. For the bikes, we bought some Prostor ceiling mount bike lifts. These allow us to use the space above, while still allowing easy access to the bikes when we want to use them. For the basketballs, soccer balls, and baseball equipment, we purchased a couple of Prostor ball and bat sport racks. These are great. They are solid steel and have a really nice smooth finish. They were easy to mount up on the wall and does exactly what we wanted them to do – keep stuff off the floor!

Garage organizers are also available for other specific items. You can get racks for golf club bags, fishing poles, ski equipment, roller blades, lawn and garden equipment, even ladders and wheelbarrows. No matter what you have to organize, you will be pleasantly surprised at your options. You truly can make sense of all that stuff. There just isn’t any excuse for clutter anymore. Go for it!

Having problems to store all your tools and equipments? Or are you looking for a suitable garage cabinet? Storage garage cabinets are made in different size, pattern and material. Do you know how to choose the most appropriate one?

Let us examine the following factors when selecting your storage cabinet.

First of all, what you must do is to categorize all your tools according to their functionality, size and work area. This will help you to decide the size you need for the garage storage cabinets. For instance, when you settle a machinery at a corner, you need to keep all tools related near to the machine for convenience purposes.

Meanwhile, you can also compartmentalize small hardware items such as drawer pulls, hinges, bolts, washers and screws. Moreover, you may need a shelf to keep equipment like power tool away from dust too.

The second thing to consider is the design of the cabinet. There are two types of cabinet. The first one is a free standing style and the other one is a mountable style. If you own both at the same time, they will definitely free out a lot of spaces in your garage.

Accessibility is also an important factor to consider. After all, you won’t want to put your tools in a cabinet that is hard to access when you need it.

The last factor consider is the materials of the cabinets. You can choose your cabinet from a variety of materials. Wood, metal or even plastic types are available in the market.

In conclusion, garage storage cabinets can be used to store tools and outdoor equipments. It can also functions as an indoor cabinet so that store things like home supplies and clothing.

Garage Organizers – The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Posted by on Sunday, January 17, 2010. Leave a Comment

Garage organizers make great gift ideas because they come in such a large variety of styles, colors, price ranges, and options. With the holiday season fast upon us, who isn’t looking for great gift ideas? Right, we all are. Consider these ideas and see if they help you find just the right thing for that special someone in your life.

Overhead Garage Organizers – These are sweet! Think about how much stuff you have that could easily be put up out of the way and forgotten about. Since it is stuff that is really only accessed one or two times every year anyway, you might as well. My favorite recommendation is the overhead platform. This is a spiffy contraption that allows you to load boxes and other items on a flat platform that is then hoisted up to the rafters. I put all my holiday decorations and keepsake boxes on there, lift it up out of the way, then basically forget about it for a year. Another popular option are bins that live on tracks that are mounted overhead. Same idea. Just load up the bins and put them up out of the way. Works great for items that only have to be accessed occasionally. Cabinet Garage Organizers – What can I say, these are the perennial classics of garage storage. These cabinets are available in so many configurations and styles that you are certain to find ones that would make great gifts. Most people really like metal cabinets because they are attractive and don’t require any maintenance other than maybe a squirt of lubricant on the hinges every couple years. Lots of space for storing tools, sandpaper, garden related items, or other items that you don’t want to look at on open shelving. Just load it up, close the doors and forget about it. Bins – These garage organizers are perfect for active families with lots of items to keep track of. All those sport balls, ski boots, roller blades, and other items that so often just get kicked to the side can now be stored in dedicated bins. These are great because they can easily be mounted on the wall at various heights to accommodate everyone in the family. Think how nice it would be to not have to trip all over soccer and basketballs every time you go into the garage. I can tell you from personal experience, this is a gift that anyone with kids would love! Fishing gear racks – Now here’s a novel idea. How about a place to store fishing gear in a way that will keep the hooks where they belong, the rods upright and unbroken, and reels clean and neat. Yep, fishing gear racks to the rescue. I can’t think of many things more irritating in the garage than a pile of fishing gear that keep falling all over itself, getting entangled and broken. These little racks mounton the wall and just plain solve the problem.

As you can see, garage organizers would make a great gift for almost anyone. Being able to keep things stored up out of the way where they can be easily accessed and kept clean and in nice condition is a good thing. The gift of garage organizers is a gift that just keeps on giving, and that’s an even better thing!

Garage Organizers for Both Frequently and Infrequently Used Items

Posted by on Sunday, January 17, 2010. Leave a Comment

Garage organizers come in many shapes and sizes. There are specialty racks, shelves, and cabinets. There are hoist systems, overhead platforms, and other ingenious ideas that people have come up with to help organize stuff. Sometimes “garage organizers” even refers to a type of person, as in people who organize garages. Usually it just refers to ways and means of making sense of life’s various things that tend to clutter up our garages and homes. Lets take a closer look at this last area. A good place to start is to break down the things that you and your family members use on both a regular and an occasional basis.

You and your kid’s bikes are probably things you use often. These things can be stored with specialty racks that make it possible for you to access your bikes easily and quickly. without having them lying all over the floor. Picture how nice it would be to not have to deal with bikes flopping all over the place, or tripping on them when you try to navigate your way past them to try to get to something else. All in all, garage organizers for bikes is a wonderful idea.

Other things you use frequently that really benefits from garage organizers is sports equipment. Soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, golf clubs, roller blades, and all sorts of other things can be safely and neatly stored in bins and on hooks designed just for such things. This sure beats the normal dump-it-on-the-floor-and-run routine that most kids use. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times you ask them to put their things away, they somehow just end up all over the garage floor. If the kids know that there is a specific rack or bin for their stuff, it makes it more likely that they will use it.

Things that you use infrequently would be things like fishing gear. Garage organizers help make sense of this stuff too. Chances are you have fishing poles, reels, nets, and other fishing stuff that only gets used every once in awhile, but mostly just sits in a jumbled mess. Instead of piling all that stuff up willy-nilly in a corner of the garage somewhere, why not organize it neatly. Next time you get ready to go fishing, loading up will be a snap. Plus, you’ll save yourself the frustration of dealing with rods and reels that are a mess.

Probably my most favorite garage organizers are garage storage cabinets. These can be left on the floor on rollers, or mounted on the wall, or even situated on a table top. Many are lockable, and most have adjustable shelves. Paints, stains, sandpapers, miscellaneous hand tools, and other items that can really turn your tool boxes into jumbled messes go great in these sorts of cabinets. Like all garage organizers, these cabinets make our lives easier because the frustration of dealing with things out of place goes away. Instead, we create an environment where we can think clearly, access things we need easily, and just create a more relaxing vibe in our day to day lives.

Garage organizers come in all shapes and sizes, and I recommend them highly if you are interested in simplifying both the frequently, and infrequently, used items in your life. Do an inventory and decide to take action. Get the organizers you need and smile.
