In today’s world, you hear a lot about getting organized, it is the “in” thing to make life easier. We organize our closets, our shelves, our drawers, our laundry rooms, our desks and our calendar all in hopes of straightening out our lives. There are even garage organizers to fix our outdoor, where do I put it type stuff. As technology has improved, life has become more hectic and we often feel out of control as we try to juggle so many things. So anything we can organize gives us a sense of control and accomplishment.

So, say you have every thing else organized in your life, you have probably left the garage for last. It is a bit intimidating because probably while you were organizing the house anything you didn’t know where to put, was put in the garage. Plus you have your seasonal items out there (from summer camping to winter skiing), gardening supplies and any handyman tools are all stored in your garage. But spring is finally here, so it is the perfect time to tackle getting your garage in order.

Organizing your garage is going to be a big enough project, so when looking for what type of storage system you should use, there are three things to look for:

Wheeeee! Yippy! Hurray! Isn’t that what you think when you think about garage organizers? I didn’t think so. But it isn’t all that bad is it. I know some people like to keep all their camping gear, tools, family collectibles, Christmas decorations, food storage, sports equipment, and other miscellaneous goodies in a, shall we say, “creative” storage system. I’m not trying to interfere with anybody’s system of chucking, shoving, and forgetting. It’s a good system. That is, if you don’t mind the risks of not having garage organizers to keep everything ship shape.

Oh there are risks. Let’s say you get home from your ski trip with all your stuff. You’re tired and just want to get the SUV unloaded asap and get in the house where it’s warm. We all have stuff all over the place that we think we will remember where it is when we need it, and then when we do we just can’t seem to find it. I have had some experience with this cute little aspect of modern living. Four kids and two pets give me lots to keep track of. Until I discovered the power of garage organizers I would drive myself crazy looking for items I thought I would never misplace, searching for any possible square inch to put just one more thing into. The original garage organizer system was just some basic shelves that were put up along the garage walls, usually just using scraps of plywood and pine that were lying around the house. I have to admit, this is still the type of garage organizer that we use today. It works fairly well for boxes, but not good for all the miscellaneous, odd shaped items that end up in the garage.

After basic shelves, came the evolution of a utility shelf. Often made out of metal or heavy duty plastic, and the plastic ones usually break completely down to shelves and supports. We have some of these also, both the plastic type that break down as well as heavy duty metal shelves.

Along with these basic shelves, we have the everyday cabinet that can be found in many ordinary garages. The garage organizer cabinet is usually made of metal or particle board. We have the particle board variety which is heavy and will be ruined if it gets wet. But it is very good for storing paint, stain, fertilizer and other household chemicals.

But in the last 15 to 20 years, the garage organizer has evolved into full systems. These systems range from grouped cabinets of various sizes and configurations to wall slat systems that are very versatile. These wall systems can hold a variety of different hooks, shelves, baskets, caddies etc. that can hold an entire multitude of items from gardening tools to sports items to seasonal goodies to tools and bikes.

It seems like that would max out the ideas for garage organizers, but then somebody realized that there was an entire ceiling that was going unused. There are multiple overhead systems that take advantage of this fact, from a shelf that hangs from the ceiling (some on a pulley system) to special tote holders.

So with this innovative idea in mind, it made me wonder what will come next? What does the future garage organizer look like? Perhaps rotating shelves where everything has its own place, and it would be fully computerized. Just punch into the computer what you are looking for, and the shelves and cabinets would mechanically rotate until the desired item was front and center.

Perhaps some of the cabinets could even be kept in the crawl space above the garage and would robotically come down through a trap door when you did a search on the garage organizer computer system.

Better yet, think of Star Trek the Next Generation. You just walk up to a contraption built into the wall and say like Jean Luc Picard, “Tea, Earl Gray”, or more appropriately, “Stain, Dark Walnut” and the item would instantly appear. The question is, do you store everything willy nilly in the crawl space and attic, or are they just molecules floating somewhere in space to reassemble when called upon. On Star Trek, I used to wonder if they had a storage hold full of anything you could possible need to appear when summoned, but I am pretty sure it was the latter molecular scenario.

Star Trek may not be the future of garage organizer systems, but it will be interesting to see what does evolve. But for right now, there are some great systems available to improve your garage storage needs.

But perhaps we won’t need a garage, because cars will be obsolete. Beam me up Scotty!

Garage organizers are not all created equal, not by a long shot. When you have stuff to store, but not enough space to store it in, then you know a lot about storage – or the lack of it. Many garages are used to solve this problem with simple plywood shelves. This works, but isn’t very attractive. It also isn’t very efficient. As a large active family, we have lots of bikes and sports equipment to manage. Rather then just have all those things rolling, bouncing, and lying around, we’ve found that overhead garage organizers are a simple, but important part of our garage. Instead, we create an environment where we can think clearly, access things we need easily, and just create a more relaxing vibe in our day to day lives.

Yep, you can solve your storage problems with some really cool garage organizers like the ones made by Tote Trac. They have these specialty racks that allow you to store skis, snowboards, luggage, blankets, kid’s stuff, sport balls or whatever. They come in different sizes and configurations. My favorite is their 6 track family pack system. It is fairly priced at around $40 – 60 and allows you to hang the tracks from ceiling or wall joists. In closets, the garage, or wherever. The bins hang from the tracks and are easily accessible. They can be hung on drywall and hold up to 400 pounds. The construction is quality white powder coated steel and can easily be installed by one person. It even has hooks allowing you to hang your bike. Anything to get stuff off the floor!

Another one of the garage storage solutions that is really good is made by MonsterRax. They make overhead storage racks that are are an ideal storage system. Their racks are made out of 14 gauge steel frames and can hold up to 500 pounds. These are boltless and can be adjusted for how far down from the ceiling you want the heavy duty wire decking. Pretty heavy duty item that is well-made and completely modular.

And last but not least, there’s the Prostor Heavy lift overhead garage storage solutions made by Racor. No discussion of garage organizers would be complete without a mention of this ingenious product. It basically allows you to load items onto a platform and lift it up to the ceiling (up to 12 feet high) without having to use a ladder. It has a 250 pound capacity so you can really store a lot of things. It includes a 4×4 platform, winding axle, steel support beams, all necessary mounting hardware, and sells for under $200.

Maybe one of these garage storage solutions will help you. I am excited about getting some of these for my garage. I guess I’ll plan out exactly what to get over lunch. Now where did I put my keys?

It is safe to say in most parts of the country that spring is finally here and the desire to get outside and start getting some things done is in the air. The last few weekends I see people everywhere working outside, hauling stuff to the landfill and limbs to the local recycling area where they accept yard waste to mulch down to compost. Besides the yard, another area of focus for spring clean up is the garage. If most garages are like mine, a lot of extra junk has been thrown in there throughout the winter and it is time to do some serious organizing and cleaning up. But this year I decided that I needed to do more, my makeshift shelving just isn’t working anymore, I need a more intelligent use space, I need some real garage storage solutions.

With a little looking around, I discovered that there is a lot available on the market, not just different brands of garage organizers, but different solutions within each brand. These are often special wall systems for which you can purchase a variety of sizes of hooks, bins, and shelves for storing anything from garden tools, wheel barrows and ladders to bikes, balls, skis and sport rackets. From there the list goes on to whatever you might need to store.

One of my favorite categories of garage storage solutions is overhead storage. I can just imagine that this system was thought up by a very frazzled home owner who just needed more storage space than his floor and walls allowed. These systems hang from the ceiling, some are shelves or bins that you reach with a ladder, others are actually on a pulley system so you can lower it to the floor for easy access.

If you are like most people, one of these options alone will not do the trick, you will need a variety of them to come up with the best garage storage solutions for your home. But it is worth the work to get it done, your garage will become a place you do not dread going, and you will be the envy of the neighborhood!
