If you’re like most people out there who own a garage, and wonder why, and how it gets so cluttered, so fast? Well, you’re not alone in those thoughts. It seems now a days that people tend to use their garage as the end home to all that stuff that you ‘may need one day’. Chances are…you’ll never use most of that stuff that you stored. With all the different techniques to organize your garage, you can surely find one that suits you. Here are a couple of ideas…
One of the best ways to start to clear things out is to round up everything that is still in workable, usable shape. Then you can put a price tag on it and sell it at your garage sale. This could help you pay for a garage organizer. Make sure you’re not over pricing things or they won’t sell and you’ll end up throwing them out…or worse yet, keeping them again.
Another way to clear out unwanted stuff is to rent a large garbage bin and start pitching things out. If you just don’t care to go through the effort of arranging a garage sale, then the latter is what will work for you. You can also check with you local garbage pickup, sometimes they offer a once a year spring clean up where you can throw out just about anything.
Now that you can finally move in there, it’s time to figure out just how to organize your garage. The best advice would be to draw a rough sketch so that everything will have it’s own place. The gardening tools together, car lubricants, tools, poisonous pesticides and chemicals, etc. That shouldn’t take you very long, maybe 15 to 30 minutes, but its crucial if want the transformation to go smoothly.
Now the fun part begins, picking out your garage organizer package. You can go out to your local building supply store and buy the individual shelves, brackets, screws and other hardware, but there’s a much easier way. Companies like Rubbermaid have made it simple to go out and purchase one of their complete packages. These will come with everything you need; screws, wire, wood, metal or plastic shelving, all the brackets and any other hardware you need to do a complete install.
Most of the packages give you a breakdown on the components they include. They will give the size of the area that it will fit into. So before you buy, mark down some general measurements on your sketch, that way you won’t be running back there for an exchange. A lot of the packages are what’s called ‘modular’, where you can add on and redesign them when your needs change.
That’s about it, it’s not that hard, in fact even someone that has never put a garage organizer together before can do so with very little trouble. Make sure when planning on the storage of the heavier items, you provide the proper commercial or industrial shelving. Each unit will have the maximum weight limitations printed on the box, so stick to those to avoid damage and injury.
