Where To Begin Cleaning In The Garage

Posted by on Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Leave a Comment

Probably, the most sufficient space for storage in your home is your garage. This is because it offers a huge amount of space, though that space is limited depending on the use of the garage. Your garage is the perfect candidate for improving the efficiency of your storage space. Luckily, you have a ton of options available to you for taking on this project.

One option that you have is to go out and buy what known as a modular storage unit. These have components that you can mix and match with one another as you see fit to give yourself more storage space compacted into a tighter area. This will solve much of your space difficulty.

Another thing that you could do is to build your own storage area. Sometimes the modular ones just aren’t sufficient enough for the amount of storage that you may need, due to the amount of stuff that you’ve accumulated over the years. Building your own unit may help you cut back on clutter and make it easier for cleaning the useful area that you do have. As well, seasonal items will be easier to get to year in and year out, plus making it safer as you age with your home.

Shelves, cabinets, plastic containers, and wall-mounted racks are the more popular kinds of garage storage and organization solutions. Cabinets work great for protecting what’s inside them from moisture as well as dust. Shelves will save you space more efficiently but the cheapest solution are wall-mounted racks. These combined with clear plastics containers will assist you in being able to see the contents of your storage along the racks.

Just imagine a beautiful spring day. Your certainly don’t want it to go to waste there for get yourself excited to go for a bike ride, maybe do some fishing with the kids, and even enjoy a little picnic. However, when you get to your garage you see nothing less than a huge mess, with all of the equipment that you were so excited to pull out buried behind clutter, shoved in corners broken and damaged. There goes that idea. Instead, it’s time to retake your garage.

The most important part when organizing your garage is knowing where to start. You’ll first want to buy some cabinets, along with some shelves and a hammer and nails.

The sorting and storing goes as follows. You’ll need to categorize every object and put it in a spot specially designed for it. For instance sporting gear needs to be put in a cabinet or up on a shelf. Any tools should be placed in drawers hung on peg boards in an orderly fashion such as by size and type.

Be merciless about throwing things away and don’t even think twice before you toss away anything that you haven’t used recently or those things that are broken. If you haven’t fixed it yet, chances are that you won’t. Seasonal gear should also be sorted; boots and things that are out-of-season such as coats should be organized in small closets.

Once you finish sorting, organizing, and throwing away Unwanted or unneeded items, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to recognize your long lost friend; the garage floor. Maybe you can even get your car into the garage again. Wouldn’t that be special?

Even Garage Cabinets Come in a Variety of Finishes!

I have been shopping around for some garage cabinets to help me organize my shop, and I was really impressed with the large variety of cabinets available and especially the variety of materials and finishes. I had just thought metal or pressed board, but that does not do garage cabinets justice! Though plain metal cabinets that look like you high school locker are available, there are a lot of metal options with better finishes.

Of coarse, you can get just metal garage cabinets, usually made of cold rolled steel. But the neat thing is the variety of colors that are available, you don’t have to go with institutional gray unless that what you really want. Many metal cabinets are two-tone, such as red doors on black cabinets, or silver on black, or sandstone on charcoal. If you spend a lot of time in your garage, this is a great way to customize it, especially if you ad the cool checkered garage flooring that is also available.

If you need garage cabinets that are going to get a lot of use (or abuse?) and need to stand up to some serious work, then heavy duty steel cabinets are a great option. Fully welded seams for durability, full length piano hinges and higher weight capacities make steel garage cabinets perfect for a busy shop. A powder coated finish is also great for a lot of use because it helps hide the dirt and doesn’t show fingerprints that are left behind.

You can also get cabinets made of medium density fiberboard (MDF) with nice laminate finishes. If you go with UltiMATE garage cabinets, they boast a unique polyurethane coated cabinet front which offers added durability and a smooth automotive finish. Their cabinets also have a rounded profile on all doors and cabinets for a nice clean look. These are great for your home garage. Though, remember, that MDF does tend to be heavy.

If you really like the nice shiny look and don’t have little kids (or you like to wipe down cabinets regularly) then stainless steel garage cabinets may be for you. Stainless steel definitely has a classy look, and it is not unusual to see these garage cabinets used in other rooms in the house. Being steel, they are strong and durable, normally the sides and backs are steel and the doors are stainless steel.

If you are concerned about rust or rot, then aluminum cabinets may be best for you. They also come in a variety of colors (from basic black or red, to green, yellow and blue) for total customization. The surface of aluminum garage cabinets usually have a satin finish (aluminum oxide) which will last for years while being maintenance free, easy to clean, and also resists discoloration and fingerprints.

Now, if you are a true automobile and motorcycle enthusiast, then I would say that you have to go with the diamond plate garage cabinets. These are heavy duty with a flashy look that is easy to keep clean.

Regardless of the look you want in your garage, you can tell that with the variety of garage cabinets available, most anything is possible. Most finishes, though from different manufacturers, are modular so that you can pick and choose what pieces you need most and what will fit. You can get tall or short cabinets of varying widths, work benches and specialty cabinets to suit all your garage storage needs. So, good luck and have fun getting you garage organized!

Garage Cabinets Are Guaranteed Clutter Busters

Posted by on Thursday, January 14, 2010. Leave a Comment

Storage cabinets made out of metal not only protect your stuff but also reduce the litter and confusion in the house. These days many easy-to-assemble plastic, metal or wooden cabinets are available in the market and they are durable and financially viable. These economical cabinets are an excellent storage idea for keeping your tools, spare parts and garden equipment and other home improvement tools.

Very often we find we have misplaced the screwdriver just when we had to fix something or hunt for nails to put that painting up only to realize that they are nowhere to be found. Once you have a storage for tools you no longer have to hunt for these things as they would be stored in the right places and you just have to replenish your stocks, that’s all. Allen wenches, screwdrivers and paint brushes can be stored in shallow compartmentalized drawers instead of putting them into large deep drawers. Often used tools can be hung on pegs and stored that way instead of in drawers as it saves one the botheration of opening the drawer time and time again.

Sports stuff is usually piled in one corner of the garage which keeps getting bigger and bigger and one has to dig deeper and deeper to reach down and find what one is looking for. In most cases, Murphy’s Law applies and you’ll find what you want right at the very bottom. For this purpose plastic storage cabinets are ideal as they can take a lot of beating and rough treatment. These cabinets are very durable and strong and besides they don’t dent even if things are flung in roughly.

Every individual takes pride in his wine collection and the older it is the better it is. For wines, there are different storage racks where the bottles are laid horizontally in different slots to avoid settling. If you are a connoisseur of wines you could also set up temperature control thermostats that help you savor the wine and help age it too. A well-laid out, well-stocked wine cellar is any family’s pride.

Music and movies are an integral part of our lives and they can also be placed in structured, interesting looking cabinets made up of wood, Plexiglas or glass, offering up to 100 or 1000 slots to accommodate your movie and music CD or DVD collection. It’s a great way to bring order into your audio and video collection.

Outer storage is perfect for big implements like garden equipment or electric screwdrivers or cans that don’t fit into drawers. These cabinets provide the security and ease of garage storage and they come in various sizes and fittings. Whether you want shelving that’s enclosed or open depends on your needs and what you prefer. Open shelves do help in locating things faster and one can assign a shelf for each group. A few storage cabinets in strategic places and our lives suddenly become so much more organized. All it takes is a little planning and a bit of effort.

Gladiator Garageworks Manufacture a Large Variety of Garage Storage Options

Posted by on Thursday, December 24, 2009. Leave a Comment

Gladiator GarageWorks is a company that puts out some of the coolest garage organizers and systems on the market today. Since everyone wants to have a nice organized garage, and nobody likes clutter and mess, it is important to take a look at what sorts of options you really have when it comes to making sense of your garage space.

Having the right work surfaces and places to do projects in the garage is obviously one of the main concerns of anyone with a garage. It can be absolutely frustrating to need a place to set something down, only to find that every square inch is covered with stuff. The solution is to either organize things, or to get more space. Gladiator Garageworks helps do both. They make workbenches that are spacious and heavy-duty. The solid maple tops are both durable as well as attractive. Plus, they are designed to be able to put Gladiator modules underneath for even more storage. These benches can support up to 1,000 pounds because the frames are made out of steel. Using workbenches is great because, by doing so, you create dedicated space for your project and repair needs.

Another Gladiator Garageworks product line that I think is particularly useful is their cabinets. You might remember from years gone by the old plywood cabinets that used to be so common in garages and sheds. Well, those days are no more. These days people are more interested in steel and durability. The cabinets put out by Gladiator Garageworks have fixed and adjustable shelves. They have tread plate doors. How cool is that? They are designed to support hundreds of pounds and come in various widths, heights, and depths. Some even have heavy duty casters.

To complement these cabinets, Gladiator has come up with what they call their “modular” boxes. These are basically storage gear boxes on wheels that have drawers and/or shelves, and are under three feet tall. This means that these can be rolled in and out from under their workbenches. Now that’s smart thinking. If a smaller box on the wall is more your style, Gladiator GarageWorks makes those too. 24″ and 30″ wide sizes are available and are also constructed of heavy-duty steel and tread plate.

Probably the coolest thing Gladiator Garageworks puts out is it’s Chillerator Garage Refrigerator (sorry for the pun). What more could a guy want in his garage than his own personal garage fridge. You can keep six packs of… uh… yogurt, or whatever else you want to keep cool. These are Energy Star compliant and are on casters so they can be easily relocated if necessary. This particular appliance has a 14 cubic foot fridge on the bottom and a 5 cubic foot freezer on the top. Sweet! They also put out a garage trash compactor. This is something I had never thought of, but it makes sense when I think about how much trash actually ends up being generated by activities in the garage.

Having a nice garage space is no longer just for the rich and famous. With innovative, high quality, durable, affordable and attractive products like Gladiator Garageworks makes, anyone can create a pleasant and useful space in their garage. There are lots of options that take garage use and organization to a whole new level.

Creative Garage Storage Solutions

Posted by on Thursday, December 17, 2009. Leave a Comment

Garage storage solutions usually come packaged in some pretty plain colors. I mean, everyone gets it that shelves are a good idea; but that’s so drab. Everyone also gets it that cabinets are good – can someone please pass me the Nodoz. I am not suggesting that shelves and cabinets don’t have a place in solving your storage problems. I am just saying that we can all go beyond these basics. Let’s take a look at some creative ways to store things in your garage that go beyond shelves and cabinets.

One of the coolest creative garage storage solutions I have seen utilizes the space overhead. If you think about it, we all tend to use floor space without a second thought. We even lift things up just a bit when we start setting things on a bench or on a shelf. Those things help, but it’s time to think just a bit higher. There is space above to spare. How about overhead storage racks that attach right to the rafters of your garage? Have you seen these things? You simply screw some tracks into the wooden rafters above and slide on some plastic bins. Viola! There you have it, an overhead storage solution for your garage. This allows you to put all those things up out of the way that are hardly ever accessed. Things like holiday decorations, lights and such.

One of the on going problems with not implementing the right garage storage solutions is that when things get cluttered along the outside edge of the garage, there is absolutely no place to store things that really need storing. It is obvious that you should get rid of the things that you never use or access. Be gone with such rabble. Once this is done you are in a position to truly appreciate and utilize the next several creative garage storage solutions, i.e., bins and racks.

Turns out there are actually bins designed for storing sports balls, roller blades, rackets, baseball gloves, and many other things that typically get tossed on the floor or lost in a pile somewhere. Most of these are attractive powder coated metal bins that are easily adjustable for where you want to install them on the wall. Some even have integral hanging racks with different attachment point options. This is a nice feature because while one height might be good for the adults in the family, it will be completely unworkable for the shorter folks. Anytime you can get adjustable garage storage solutions, that is a good thing. The kids will thank you. And, if you think about it, it’ll actually save you time and effort as well because you won’t always have to be running out to the garage to hand things down to the kids when they need them.

As for racks, these are real things of beauty. Garage storage solutions have to take care of the things in life that don’t stack or store away in bins easily. These are things like bikes and fishing rods and reels. Have you noticed how frustrating it is to try to lean a fishing pole against the wall? They always tip over against the ones next to it and turn into a mangled mess. Racks designed for storing fishing gear are a real life saver. Bike racks are made that allow storage against the wall, or lifted up into the space above. Whatever you do, be creative with garage storage solutions and you will be forever glad you did.

3 Garage Storage Ideas to Bring Peace of Mind

Posted by on Thursday, December 17, 2009. Leave a Comment

Garage storage is no laughing matter. There is nothing humorous about tripping all over those soccer balls and snow skis. There’s nothing to chuckle about when every time you go out into the garage to find something you can’t. And a cluttered and messy garage is a sure sign of even bigger problems, like maybe not being able to organize or take responsibility for the way things are kept in your life in general. But I’m not here to chastise you if this hits a little close to home. I am, however, here to suggest some ways to get your garage, and the things in it, under control. I know what it is like to have the garage be a huge pain in the buttusky. I also know what it is like to have a garage that has lots of storage for all the things that need to go there. I am here to tell you, the second is a much better way to go. When a garage is organized and squared away, you can literally think straighter and feel more at ease. I’m sure the Chinese would have a ready lesson for us here about the concept of feng shui. Be that as it may, let’s take a look at some options for storing things in the garage that you may not have considered before. These are sure to promote your sense of well-being and peace of mind.

Garage storage idea #1: Use the vertical space in the garage. This idea alone can do wonders for the average garage, not to mention the average garage owner. Getting things up off the floor is a great start. Think about all the vertical space that goes unused. Putting things up into that space is perhaps the best thing any of us can do to get organized. I particularly like the simple step of purchasing some shelving and/or cabinets. Using these not only allows easier access to your things, but also allows your things to be closed off from view. Shelves and cabinets with doors gives the garage a more finished look as well.

Garage storage idea #2: Get creative with the use of specialty racks and bins. There are some really innovative storage solutions in this category. For example, if you are a fisherman then you will be happy to learn that companies like Racor make rod racks that let you keep your fishing rods and reels up out of the way and secured against the wall. No more random tipping over and getting tangled and mangled. These racks look good and are functional. Another example are sport ball bins. These are simple, but go a long way to clean up the clutter. Basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, and all sorts of related sports paraphernalia are brought under strict control with the right bins.

Garage storage idea #3: Use overhead storage devices. These come in two basic configurations. One is the rack and bin system where you install rails in the rafters or against the ceiling for plastic storage bins to hang from. The other is a platform pulley configuration where you load boxes and other items onto a platform that is then raised up with ropes and pulleys. Things like holiday decorations and keepsake items that are infrequently accessed are perfect candidates for these sorts of storage solutions.

There’s nothing wrong with storing things besides your cars and trucks in the garage. Just take charge of your garage storage situation with some of these ideas and your garage will become a place you don’t dread to go into. And, you will be happier and more content.

What type of storage/shelving should I get for my garage?

Posted by on Thursday, November 5, 2009. Leave a Comment

We are currently have a 24X32 two car garage put up. Obviously both cars will be going in it, so I’m not exactly sure what the measurements will be on how much room we will have for storing things like bikes, mowers, etc. I work on my car a lot, so I want to be able to have a place for my tools. Should I just hang up regular shelving, or would it be better for me to install a work bench type thing with cabinets and such on the wall?

am starting a residntial garage floor and storage business. I need a cool name that people will remember?

Posted by on Monday, September 7, 2009. Leave a Comment

I will be installing cabinets, and doing epoxy and modular flooring. I am trying to come up with a name that says all that, and will be easy to remember
