I am assuming you just need to make sure they’re not load bareing before you cut anything. I want to bolt 2×6′s from the bottom of the " W " to the roof. Then bolt 2×6′s across the top of the peak about 3ft down. Then the part that isn’t load baring anymore cut out so I can have strait up walls like a bonus room over the garage but just for storage. Can I do this without the gargage roof sagging, or violating a code. If I go to sell my house I don’t want an inspector to say this needs to be taken down and repaired.

The roof of my garage has open framing. Each joist is a 2×8 and is spaced almost 3 feet apart. I would like to put a plywood floor with a drop down ladder to create storage space in the in that area. I know I need to add joists, but what material should I use? Any reccomendations on a plan? Any resources on the web?

In mygarage, I have open framing, where each rafter is a 2×10 and spaced about 3 feet apart. I want to add plywood sheathing to top of the rafters to create a storage area and a drop down ladder. My concern though is that the rafters are about 3 feet apart. Each rafter is about 26 feet long. Can someone give me detailed explaination on how they would go about making sure the rafters support enought weight? If I need to add rafters, should I use engineered wood? I have searched and searched for ideas on the net to no avail. I need some help! Thanx!
